When Burning Fat IMPROVES Your Health
By Kevin DiDonato MS, CSCS, CES
What often comes to your mind when you lose weight – or are on the quest to lose weight?
Is it losing your unwanted belly fat? Is it reducing your risk for heart disease?
Is it just to see your feet again? Or, do you just want to look good naked?
Whatever the reason, losing weight (the right way!) is good for your health, self-esteem, and confidence.
But, what you may not know is that losing weight does a NUMBER of things in your body.
And, each one of those things is NECESSARY for keeping you healthy for years to come.
Weight Loss and Disease Risk
Now, most people who lose weight do it to look better on the outside.
But losing weight goes a lot further than that.
For example, when you lose weight, you may also decrease your blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides. And, this may result in better heart health.
Or, you can see a drop – or better control – of your blood sugar numbers. And this results in a reduced risk for metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, or even diabetes.
So, as you can see, losing weight is good for so many reasons.
Now, this may hold true for normal people without any health-related issues currently.
But, for those people who have some issues that boost weight gain, does losing weight improve their health?
For example, overweight or obese individuals and post-menopausal women (due to a loss of the estrogen) are at increased risk for disease, especially cancer.
Can losing weight improve their health and lower inflammation levels (the root of most diseases)?
Well, a new study says YES!
They took overweight or obese post-menopausal women and administered a calorie-restricted diet, an aerobic exercise program, a combined diet and exercise program, or a control group to test and see which one lowered inflammation and reduced chronic disease risk.
At baseline and after one year, the researchers tested C-reactive proteins, serum amyloid A, interleukin-6 levels, and other factors related to cancer and inflammation.
Here’s what they found:
They showed that people with a combination diet and exercise program decreased C-reactive protein levels compared to controls.
C-reactive protein is a blood marker in the body that measures inflammation levels. The lower the number the better your chance for weight loss and better health is.
But here is where it gets good:
People that were able to lose FIVE percent of their overall body weight reduced inflammatory biomarkers when compared to the controls.
And, the diet and the diet plus exercise groups reduced C-reactive protein levels in all subgroups of baseline BMI, waist circumference, CRP level, and fasting glucose.
They concluded:
“Our findings indicate that a caloric restriction weight loss diet with or without exercise reduces biomarkers of inflammation in postmenopausal women, with potential clinical significance for cancer risk reduction.”
Reduce Your Cancer Risk
If you want to reduce your risk for many different chronic diseases, then your best bet may be to lose some weight, if you have any extra to lose.
This may reduce your inflammation levels – which is a factor in most disease processes – therefore improving your overall health.
And, according to this study, if you are overweight or obese and lose at least five percent of your overall body weight, then you may significantly reduce your inflammation levels, therefore reducing your risk for cancer.
For your health – and not just your overall appearance – losing weight and inflamed fat may improve many different aspects of your health.
