NEWS FLASH: Dietitians Agree, These are the WORST Things You Can Believe
By Kevin DiDonato MS, CES
Let me be straight with you…
Just because I know a little bit about nutrition…or exercise…to health in general, doesn’t mean I want to talk about it all the time.
Yes, I enjoy what I do…
…but sometimes, hearing what other people are doing sounds like nails scrapping a chalkboard to me.
And it happens all the time!
Once people know what you do, they try their best to pick your brain about it.
Imagine if you were a cardiologist and people were asking the best way to clean out your arteries—without opening you up.
Of course, this is an extreme situation and one that doesn’t come up very often (we hope).
But when it comes to being a trainer/nutritionist/dietitian, we hear it all about what people are eating (or not eating)…what exercises they are doing…and of course, why their way is the best way.
Let me let you in on a secret…
There are some things that just don’t sit right with us! When we hear certain things—especially when it comes to food and eating—we tend to cringe on the inside.
So, let me give you a heads up on the top THREE nutrition statements we don’t want to hear coming out of your mouth:
1. “No thanks! I don’t eat CARBS!”
Great, you don’t eat carbs. I am happy for you.
But please, don’t try to convince me that going carbless is the best thing for me (or someone else).
It’s true that carbs have gotten a bad rep. And with diets that stress low-carb or NO carb,, it further perpetuates the statement that carbs are bad.
But carbs are NOT bad. In fact, carbs could do wonders for your body and your overall exercise performance.
Plus, carbs contain fiber, vitamins, and minerals that are needed for optimal nutrition.
So, I will tell you this once: I you want to change your body, drop some body fat, and lose that baby weight, you need to eat carbs. Period.
2. “I don’t do gluten.”
Here’s another catch phrase that a lot of people use—going gluten free.
It’s true that gluten may cause some pretty severe reactions—especially for those with celiac or those who are sensitive to gluten—which could be a very small percentage of people in this world.
For the majority of people, however, eating gluten may not do much of anything to their bodies.
Now, when I ask why they are avoiding gluten, the answer (most of the time) is geared towards weight loss.
But the truth is: gluten is not the reason why you’re gaining weight! The reason why you’re gaining weight is because you may be simply eating too much of the WRONG foods and not enough of the RIGHT ones.
Try portioning your foods out and avoiding overeating foods (even healthy ones) as excess calories may easily be stored as fat.
3. “Sorry, I NEVER eat that!”
Really? You never indulge in a cookie…or a slice of cake…or a few slices of pizza?
There’s a good chance that you’re not being entirely true on this one!
Most people label foods as bad or good—especially when it comes to losing weight.
But guess what? Those bad foods that you’re avoiding (or telling me you’re avoiding) may actually help you lose fat.
Having those “forbidden” foods, you may have less of a chance to over-indulge when presented with the situation.
And overindulging may lead to weight gain!
However, eating these foods—every so often—could prevent unruly cravings and could even give you better fat loss in the long run.
Take Home Message
There are some pretty simple catch phrases that most dietitians and nutritionists simple don’t want to hear.
Not because they’re not true, but simply because people say these catch phrases in order to show you that they know something about weight loss.
Although there are many of them out there, these three take the cake.
Eliminating these catch phrases and beliefs may be the difference between you losing weight (and body fat) and you staying right where you are.
