Does Your Healthcare Professional Recommend These?

Supplement use has grown across the country and around the world.

In fact, there are more people using supplements for bodybuilding purposes, bone health, heart health, and general overall health and wellness.

A recent report shows that doctors are more apt to use supplements and recommend certain supplements to their clients in order to improve their health and wellness.

Now, there is an increasing amount of dietitians that are using supplements themselves and, like doctors, are recommending supplements to their clients.

A new study published in the Nutrition Journal reports the results of a 2009 survey conducted with dietitians that shows supplements usage among dietitians as well as their recommendation of supplements to their clients for health purposes.

Let me explain…

Supplement Popularity

It is estimated that more than half the population in the US use supplements to support different aspects of health.

Of course, dietitians and doctors have always recommended the use of whole foods as a means to gain all the necessary nutrition your body needs for optimal health.

However, a survey in 2009 of 300 registered dietitians, shows that supplement use and recommendations has increased over the years.

In fact, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) now recognize that supplements may in fact play a large role in supporting health and wellness.

In 2009, they surveyed 300 registered dietitians in the “Life…Supplemented” HCP Studies, to gauge their own personal supplement use.

They found that 74% of the dietitians used dietary supplements, while only 22% occasionally used nutritional supplements.

The main reason for supplement use was for bone health (58%), overall health and wellness (53%), and to fill in nutritional gaps related to their own personal nutrition (42%).

Of the 300 dietitians who responded, 97% of them reported that they recommended supplements to their clients and patients.

Of the dietitians who responded, it was reported that they recommended supplements to their clients to help improve bone health (70%) and fill in nutritional gaps (67%).

There was a statement released by the dietitians that stated that there are gaps in their clients’ nutrition that could effectively be remedied from the use of nutritional supplements.   A wide majority of the dietitians who responded (87%) agreed with the above statement.

The dietitians who responded to the survey stated they follow healthy habits for weight loss and optimal health, and that they used supplements to fill in their own personal gaps.

Also, most of the dietitians polled responded that they would like more continuing education course regarding supplements so they can relay that information to their patients and clients.

From the survey results, they concluded that a majority of dietitians use dietary supplements as an approach to improving their health and wellness.  Also, there is a majority of dietitians who regularly recommend the use of supplements to their patients and clients as a way to improve their health and fill in nutritional gaps.

Fill In Your Personal Gaps

The use of supplements has increased steadily over the years.

With the quality of supplements improving, people are now turning their attention to multivitamins, krill oil, and anti-aging care products to fill in their nutritional gaps.

Current studies show that doctors and now dietitians are using and recommending supplements to improve bone health, heart health, memory, and overall general health.

In fact, the most widely recommended supplements by both doctors and dietitians are multi-vitamins and products that promote heart health (omega-3 rich Krill oil).

As the supplement industry continues to grow due to the recommendations of doctors and dietitians, people will be turning to higher quality supplements to improve all aspects of their health and wellness.
