The 1 Addictive Food That People Can't Get Rid Of (worse than street drugs)

By Kevin DiDonato MS, CSCS, CES--Level 1 Certified Precision Nutrition and Certified Personal Trainer

I hate to break this to you…

But we have a problem.  A rather large problem at that!

We are addicted…

Not to TV…

Not to exercise…

Not to healthy eating…

We are addicted to sugar – and lots of it!

And guess what?  Big food is capitalizing on this – and reaping the benefits (billions, if not trillions, of dollars each year)!

This is only going to get worse.  How do we know this?

We know this by looking at the overweight/obesity statistics across the country – and the world!

The numbers don’t lie…

They are increasing each and every year (with the exception of a few places) meaning that more and more people are falling victim to this very addictive food!

Sugar and Addiction

It’s hard to believe that SUGAR - the white, grainy stuff that you put in your cupcakes, coffee, or tea, is one of the most addictive nutrients out there.

It ranks up there with addictions to street drugs, namely cocaine and heroin.

So, how does this addiction work?

It’s pretty simple really…

The one nutrient your brain needs to function happens be the glucose.  And that is what sugar provides for your brain – and your body.

But here’s the thing:

Sugar, just like cocaine and heroin, may increase dopamine levels in your brain!  And the more dopamine you have circulating through your brain, the better you feel.

You feel happy…

You feel joyous…

You feel addicted to happiness (in a weird sort of way)!

These feel-good feelings could be due, in large part, to the amount of dopamine that is moving through your brain.

But here’s where it gets bad…

When you have a lot of sugar, your brain releases a lot of dopamine.  However, in order to keep that same level of dopamine going, you need to keep adding sugar to the mix.

But your brain may get used to this level, which could lower your production of dopamine.  So you may need to eat more sugar, just to get the dopamine flowing again.

And when you cut out sugar, that’s when the cravings begin…

The trembling hands…

The headaches…

The need for more sugar!

It may be quite unbearable, but it happens!

Now, Big Food knows this about sugar, fat, and salt combos (has the biggest increase in dopamine), so they routinely put different forms of sugar into YOUR foods in order to make you crave and buy it.

In fact, statistics show that there are roughly 600,000 different food products on the market today.  And roughly 80 percent of them contain one (or more) forms of sugar.

Does it add up?

Of course it does!  Statistics show, on average, a person eats between152 and 160 POUNDS of sugar each year!

No wonder why we have such a problem with obesity levels!

Take Home Message

Sugar – a nutrient that is in almost all foods – is an extremely addictive nutrient.

It may be as addictive as cocaine or heroin may be!

And, in the absence of sugar, you could experience unruly cravings, depression, anxiety, trembling hands, or serious headaches.

One of the main reasons for this is the increase in dopamine levels.  This could boost the reward area of your brain, therefore making your brain crave sugary foods in order to satisfy the need for sugar.

This could lead to overindulging in sugar, which could lead to a number of different health issues, namely, fat gain, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

If you want to improve your health, then you need to limit and cut back on your intake of refined carbohydrates, sugar, and other processed foods.

This could lead to improvements in your health – and fat loss!
