THIS Popular Beverage KILLS 180,000 People Each Year (not what you think)
Soda. Pop. Flavored-sugar water.
Whatever you like to call it, it’s a drink that could be putting you – and your health – at serious risk!
In fact, sugar-sweetened beverages have been linked to higher-than-average death rates, not only in this country, but around the world.
Sugar-sweetened beverages have been linked to roughly 500 deaths – per day – from a number of chronic diseases including heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
How’s that making you feel about your favorite soda?
Sugar-sweetened Beverages and Health
If you haven’t noticed, there is a LOT of talk lately about sugar-sweetened beverages.
Some good news and some, well, not so good news!
The good news (some can say): the mayor of New York proposed a bill limiting the sale of certain sized sodas in New York.
And, in some cases, this may have led to a decrease in obesity levels and overall health risks.
But the problem is: government regulating what goes in your mouth (which is always a sour note).
Now, onto the BAD news:
Although you know that sugar-sweetened beverages are bad for your health…
That they may lead to diabetes…
Or heart disease…
Or obesity…
They have now been linked to an increased risk for death (and yes, the chronic diseases are the reason why).
And this is not just in the US, but around the world.
Researchers from Harvard have determined that many people who have health conditions – as a result of sugar-sweetened beverage intake – may be at a higher risk for death.
Here’s what they found:
In 2010, they found that over 25,000 deaths were associated with sugar-sweetened beverages – due to deaths associated with the chronic diseases.
All statistics shown are attributed to sugar-sweetened beverages:
They found that Latin America/Caribbean has the most deaths from diabetes…
East and central Europe has the most deaths from cardiovascular disease…
And Mexico – which has, by far, the largest intake of sugar-sweetened beverages – has the highest death rate – 318 deaths out of one million people.
They did find one positive note…
Japan has the lowest consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages AND the lowest death rate at 10 deaths per one million people.
Reduce Your Intake
Sugar-sweetened beverages have been linked to a number of different health conditions including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and obesity.
And if you’re a sugar-sweetened beverage drinker, then you may be putting yourself at risk for these conditions and an earlier-than-expected death.
By cutting back – or eliminating – sugar-sweetened beverages, you will be putting your health in the forefront, and potentially reducing your risk for an early death from any one of these chronic diseases.
