If the age-old adage - you are what you eat – is true, then a lot of people are in for some serious health problems as they get older.
And this has nothing to do with if you exercise…
But it has everything to do with the type of foods you’re eating and how much of those foods you eat.
The fact is: If you like certain foods and eat a certain type of diet, then chances are you may be driving your health straight into the ground.
Western-Type Diet and Your Mortality
Do you enjoy sweet meats and treats?
Or do you consume fried foods on a regular basis?
Are the only grains you get refined and processed?
And do you regularly consume whole milk dairy products or fatty creamer?
If you do, then chances are you regularly consume a Western-type diet.
And this diet, research suggests, may be one factor associated with a decrease in your lifespan.
Here’s what the study’s authors found:
The first thing they noted in their study was that diet was associated with good or poor health as you get older.
So they examined whether diet, assessed at midlife, was associated with different aging phenotypes.
They discovered that a low adherence to a diet that followed the Alternative Healthy Eating Index, may be associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular and noncardiovascular deaths.
But here is the important part of the study:
People who followed a Western-Type Diet had lower odds of ideal aging, which was independent of other health behaviors.
They concluded:
“By considering healthy aging as a composite of cardiovascular, metabolic, musculoskeletal, respiratory, mental, and cognitive function, the present study offers a new perspective on the impact of diet on aging phenotypes.”
Western Diet and Your Health
If you are a person who likes refined grains, processed foods, sweet meats, red meat, high-fat dairy products, and deep fried foods, then you are a person who enjoys a Western-Type diet.
Although these foods may taste good, they may be extremely bad for your health.
In fact, they may increase things like heart disease, diabetes, some cancers, and according to this study, premature death.
In order to reverse the harmful trends, you need to do the following:
Eat a healthy diet. A diet that contains lean proteins, healthy carbohydrates (legumes, sprouted-grain breads, etc.) healthy fat, and plenty of fruits and vegetables may be the ideal diet plan for losing weight, improving your overall health, and reducing your disease risk.
You need to exercise. Exercise has been shown to reduce blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar, and other contributing factors that may lead to premature death.
If you do these two things, then chances are you may live a long and fulfilling life.
