Does This Type Of Diet Cause Strokes?

Stroke, which is the fourth leading cause of death around the world, occurs when there is a blockage in the vessels to your brain.

In fact, when there is a block in one of the arteries to the brain, even if just for a few seconds, could cause a lack of oxygen to the cells, which could lead to cells' death and disability.

It has been shown that having a stroke is 80 percent preventable through the use of a proper diet and exercise program.

According to the results of a review published in Nutrition Reviews, altering diet patterns and different food choices could lead to a reduction in your risk for having a stroke.

Let me explain…

Stroke Risk and Lifestyle Changes

According to this study, they have shown that 80 percent of strokes are preventable.

Strokes, which could be caused by a blockage from a blood clot in the brain or in another area of your body, can be caused by poor lifestyle choices.

In fact, overweight or obese individuals, people who drink heavily, have too much fat or sodium in their diet, and smoke are at an increased risk for having a stroke.

The authors of this study wanted to determine if the impact of food groups or dietary patterns could reduce the risk for having a stroke.

They performed a systematic review (collection of articles related to the subject) searching all the major research databases.

The data they collected showed that fruits, vegetables, and soy were protective against having a stroke; while fish, animal products, and whole wheat products showed varying results.

They also noted that diets, such as the Mediterranean and DASH diet had protective effects in the body and decreased the risk for having a stroke, compared to low-fat diets which increased your stroke risk.

However, they did note that a typical Western diet (high omega-6 fatty acids and low omega-3 fatty acids) could also increase your risk for having a stroke.

From their work, they concluded that future research should focus on developing dietary recommendations for stroke prevention based on current clinical trials and ongoing research.

Although this study shows tremendous potential for stroke prevention, the researchers noted that more studies need to be conducted on dietary patterns and food choices, in order to develop proper recommendations for stroke prevention through dietary means.

Prevent Your Risk for a Stroke

Stroke, which is a leading cause of disability and the fourth leading cause of death, is a very preventable disease.

Through a proper diet plan, better food choices, and monitoring fat and sodium intake, you could reduce your risk for having a stroke.

In fact, according to the results of this study, dietary food patterns and food choices could decrease your risk for having a stroke, and could be a vital component in stroke prevention.

Monitoring sodium intake, increasing fruit and vegetable intake, and including essential fats, could decrease your risk for a stroke and could improve other aspects of your health.
