The DANGERS Of Farm-Raised Fish (what you need to know to protect your heart)
By Kevin DiDonato MS, CES--Level 1 Certified Precision Nutrition and Certified Personal Trainer
You’ve been told to eat more fish in order to protect your heart and other cells in your body.
But, what you haven’t been told – and definitely should be told – is that the fish you’re currently eating may not be the BEST choice for you.
Let me explain…
The Dangers of Farmed Fish
Unless you live close to a fish market, where boats drop off fresh, wild-caught fish every day, then chances are you’re not getting the highest quality fish around.
In fact, you may be getting a fish that may be increasing your risk for developing cancer and a whole host of other chronic diseases.
Enter into the picture farmed-raised fish.
Farmed fish – also known as aquaculture - is a growing industry.
This is where they raise fish from eggs - or catch wild fish then put them in a pen – and feed them a combination of fish meal and fish oil…
…or they feed them a combination of vegetable feed and vegetable oil.
So, these “farmed” fish, are unable to live in their NATURAL habitat, eat their NATURAL food, and engage in their NATURAL fish activities.
They, instead, are caught or raised and put in nets – sometimes with thousands of other fish – and fed a crappy diet that takes away from their potential for improving your health.
In fact, farmed fish may be so bad for you, that some people recommend that eating farmed-raised fish – even twice a month – may be too much.
Why?
Well for starters, according research, farmed-raised fish contains higher levels of PCBs, dioxins, dieldrin, and toxaphene when compared to wild-caught fish.
The higher levels of these contaminants found in farmed-raised fish may be partly due to the diet they are fed. As previously mentioned, farmed-raised fish are fed a diet high in fish meal and other oils.
This fish meal is made from other wild-caught fish that feed on aquatic organisms (such as zooplankton and algae), and may contain some levels of toxins in their system.
They are then caught, ground, and fed to farmed-raised fish, which may only increase the concentration of the toxins in their flesh and oil.
That means, if you’re eating high amounts of farmed-raised fish, then you may be directly increasing the amount of toxins that are going into your body.
And these toxins may lead to cancer or other deadly health consequences.
Plus, farmed-raised fish that are harvested in other countries may have higher toxin levels; therefore, knowing where your fish is coming from should be first and foremost.
This has caused some changes in the labeling industry in terms of labeling farmed-raised fish as farmed and also where the fish comes from.
Reduce Your Danger by Reducing Your Intake
As you know, fish is highly recommended for better health. Many species of fish contain helpful fats – called omega-3 fatty acids – that may lend a hand in protecting your health.
However, the type of fish you eat is extremely important as well.
You see, farmed-raised fish may contain higher levels of toxins, contaminants, and pollutants due to how they are fed.
And, when you eat farmed-raised fish, you are also eating those same toxins that may be found living in the flesh of those fish.
Result = higher toxin exposure = increased risk for chronic diseases – especially cancer.
That’s why only eating farmed fish – ONCE a month – is highly recommended.
But, since the aquaculture industry is so large, there’s a pretty good chance you will be getting some kind of farmed-raised fish in the future…
…unless of course you live by a fish market where they sell only the finest, wild-caught fish around!
Don’t risk your health…
AVOID farmed fish for better health and to potentially reduce your risk for chronic diseases.
