Improve Heart Health With Capsaicin

A recent study was presented at one of the American Chemical Society’s meetings that could shed new light onto the treatment of cholesterol and heart disease.

In the presentation, capsaicin and one of its related compounds capsaicinoids, was shown to improve heart health through a number of different mechanisms.

Capsaicin, which is the pungent component of the hot pepper and which gives the peppers its heat, has been linked to many different improvements in health and wellness.

Most notably, capsaicin has been shown to reduce weight and body fat, which could lead to improvements in many health aspects.

By losing weight, you may reduce your risk for developing metabolic syndrome, type 2 Diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer.

The study, which has yet to be published, could show that including capsaicin and capsaicinoids could lead to improvements in heart health.

Let me explain…

Capsaicin and Heart Health

Capsaicinoids, which is the active ingredient in hot peppers, has gained a lot of attention due to its potential to increase metabolic rate, which could increase weight loss.

However, capsaicinoids now have been shown to improve some parameters of heart health, which could reduce your risk for heart disease.

Researchers tested to see if capsaicinoid ingestion could alter the function of your blood vessels, metabolism of cholesterol, and certain gene expression for different reactions that could increase heart disease risk.

They divided male hamsters into 5 different groups: a control group (0% capsaicinoids), or groups consisting of 0.010% group, a 0.015% group, a 0.020 group, and a 0.030% group who were fed a diet consisting of capsaicinioids.

Their research showed that capsaicinoids lowered total serum cholesterol, non-HDL cholesterol and triacylglycerol’s.  However, they did note that HDL cholesterol remained unchanged.

Also, they noticed the four groups who consumed capsaicinoids showed a reduction in plaque formation compared to control subjects.

The researchers also showed that contents in the fecal matter, in the groups consuming capsaiciniods, showed increased cholesterol absorption.

They showed that capsaicinoids increased the excretion of certain sterols, plus it also decreased the ration between campesterol and cholesterol, which helped to explain the increased cholesterol absorption.

In reference to vascular health, capsaicinoid ingestion could improve endothelium-dependent relaxation and reduce endothelium-dependent constriction by potentially inhibiting the activity of COX-2 but having no effect on COX-1.

COX, is a family of enzymes that produce mediators associated with inflammation and pain.  COX-2 has been shown to be undetectable in your body but is most commonly seen in macrophages and other sites where inflammation is located.

COX-2 has also been shown to be up-regulated in some carcinomas and may be responsible for tumorigenesis.

They researchers concluded that ingestion of capsaicinoids could be beneficial in improving lipoprotein profile and aortic function.

Capsaicin and Heart Health

Capsaicin, the pungent form of hot peppers, has been used for years as a way to spice up foods and as a way to increase thermogenesis, which could lead to weight loss.

Now, a portion of capsaicin, the capsaicinoids, has been shown to have heart health benefits.

However, even though this study shows promise for treatment for heart health by reducing cholesterol by capsaicinoids, more research is needed to validate their findings before it can be considered a viable treatment option.

Capsaicin, which can have many practical applications, could aid in weight loss, improved cholesterol levels and having the potential to reduce plaques associated with heart disease.

This could provide a new approach to using this commonly used spice.
