The Three WORST Snacks For Fat Loss
By Kevin DiDonato MS, CES--Level 1 Certified Precision Nutrition and Certified Personal Trainer
Do you often snack throughout the day to lose weight? Or to speed up your metabolism? Or to help you reach your daily caloric intake?
No matter who you are, or what you have been told, snacking may be a daily habit and one that has been instilled into your life from a very young age.
But can snacking help with your weight loss? Yes and no…
Snacking and Weight Loss
Weight loss experts agree that snacking may help you speed up your metabolism and enable you to lose fat.
The reason behind it is pretty simple too: eating smaller meals – including snacks - throughout the day, may stimulate fat burning and prevent your body from going into “starvation” mode.
This is great for providing your body with the right nutrients, at the right times, and in the right combinations to maximize their positive effects on your weight.
But, there is a slight problem: there is a RIGHT way and a WRONG way to snacking.
Editors Note: Is your snack not satisfying your appetite? If so, then THIS is the snack for you.
The wrong way: eating high calorie, nutrient-dense snacks that are found in vending machines, in the aisle at checkout lanes, or box options that are filled with the wrong nutrients may cause fat gain and not fat loss.
For example, greasy potato chips, candy bars, and pastries may look appealing, but each contains loads of sugar, fat, and calories that add no real nutrition to your day.
The right way: low-calorie, vitamin- and mineral-packed, and protein-rich options may shred your body fat and leave you looking and feeling amazing.
These options are great for providing your body with the right nutrients it needs for better overall fat loss.
Here are some great examples of snack options you should AVOID if you want to lose more fat:
1. Fruit-on-the Bottom Yogurts
There is just something special about having some yogurt topped with fruit. But if you’re in the mindset of losing weight, it would be best to avoid the fruit-on-the-bottom yogurts.
Most fruit that is contained in these yogurts is packed in high fructose corn syrup, or other syrups, in order to sweeten the fruit and make it more appealing to the consumer.
However, this does nothing but add extra calories to your snack, which in turn leads to greater fat GAIN!
An ideal option would be to enjoy plain or Greek yogurt topped with fresh berries or apple slices.
2. Pretzels
Although considered a much better option than other snacks out there, pretzels have some downfalls.
First, most pretzel brands are made from processed white flours, which could spike your blood sugar and insulin levels.
And secondly, most pretzels contain a TON of sodium, which may boost your blood pressure and could also lead to bloating.
A better option would be a serving of almonds or other nuts. Not only are they lower in sodium, but they also contain healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and proteins that your body needs to burn fat and build lean, metabolism-boosting, muscle tissue.
3. Diet Soda
Many, many people who look to lose weight resort to diet soda to get their caffeine fix without the added calories and sugar.
However, diet soda may lead to greater fat gain, increase your risk for diabetes, and may even cause sugary food cravings, which could lead to overeating and weight gain.
The easiest fix for this deadly habit is to include more water into your day. And to give your water a flavor boost, add in some berries, lime, lemon, or other flavors for a great-tasting, zero calorie, fat burning, and thirst-quenching beverage.
Better Snacks = Greater Fat Loss
As you know, fueling your body with the right foods and nutrients is the easiest way to boost your metabolism and burn greater amounts of fat.
You also know that snacking may be a good way to increase your calories, plus, those important vitamins and minerals that your body needs for optimal fat burning.
And there is no better way to ensure you’re burning fat than avoiding the three snack options from above.
Filled with sugar, artificial ingredients, and processed flours, these three choices do nothing but ADD to your waistline.
For better fat loss, avoid pretzels, fruit-on-the-bottom yogurts, and diet soda.
