Could The Sun Reduce Your Risk For Alzheimer’s Disease?
Vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin, has been associated with many positive and sometimes negative health benefits.
Having lower levels of vitamin D has been associated with softening of the bones, cognitive issues, diabetes, and obesity.
However, on the positive side, increased levels of Vitamin D has been associated with stronger bones, less risk for Diabetes, and improved cognitive function.
Lack of vitamin D, which can be termed hypovitaminosis D, is linked to a number of different factors.
Insufficient dietary intake of Vitamin D plus inadequate sun exposure, problems with absorption in your body of vitamin D, and a lack of conversion of vitamin D in your body, may lead to a softening of your bones and the potential risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease.
In fact, a new study published in the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Science, could show the benefits of having higher Vitamin D levels by reducing your risk for Alzheimer’s disease.
Let me explain…
Vitamin D and Alzheimer’s Risk
Low vitamin D levels have been associated with substantial health issues as it relates to your bones.
In fact, low vitamin D levels could impair bone mineralization which could cause bone softening and an increased risk for fractures and frailty.
The authors of this study wanted to determine if Vitamin D status was a risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s disease in elderly women who were free from any type of cognitive disease.
The recruited 498 community dwelling older women with an average age of 79.8, and who were free from dietary supplementation of Vitamin D.
They were divided into three groups according to their dementia status at the end of seven years:
• No dementia
• Onset of Alzheimer’s disease
• Onset of other forms of dementia
They determined vitamin D status from a self-administered food frequency questionnaire.
Of the 498 women, 70 women developed Alzheimer’s disease, 361 women did not develop dementia or Alzheimer’s, and 67 women developed some form of dementia.
The researchers noted that women with the lowest intake of vitamin D (50.3µg/week) showed a higher risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease then women with higher levels (59.0µg/week).
They also determined that low vitamin D intake was associated with an increased risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease, but not dementia (all forms).
Higher intakes of vitamin D, the researchers noted, could be associated with a lower risk for developing Alzheimer’s than they noticed with lower levels of vitamin D.
From their work, the researchers concluded that increased vitamin D levels could be associated with a lower risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease in elderly women.
Vitamin D and Your Health
Vitamin D, otherwise known as the sunshine vitamin, has been linked to a number of different health benefits.
From strengthening of your bones to improvements in obesity levels, Vitamin D is becoming an important vitamin to include in your routine every day.
Now, according to this new study, vitamin D may even reduce your risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease.
A diet that includes natural sources of Vitamin D plus exposure to the sun may increase your vitamin D levels, therefore preventing issues associated with low vitamin D.
