The 1 Drink That Strips Away Belly Fat?
There are a lot of ways to eat before and after a workout.
Some load up on highly refined foods (think Snickers), while others focus on eating high protein, low-fat foods and good carbohydrates.
One works better than the other.
Do you know which one?
Of course, you already know that a meal containing protein and carbohydrates may be one of the best ways to recover after a workout.
And that is why whey and casein proteins have become so popular in the fitness industry.
But there is a BIG difference between the two…
And, what about all those trainers that say about low-fat milk and milk products as a good way to recover…
Whey vs. Casein
Have you ever wondered what happens when milk is processed?
Or how the fitness industry gets so much whey and casein protein?
Well, to start, when milk – which is rich in carbohydrates, whey and casein proteins – is processed, you notice some changes to the milk.
First, there are clumps (casein) and a liquid portion (whey) that forms in the processing. And these substances form the basis for most protein powder on the market today.
And when these two types of proteins are processed, they are filtered to make protein powder.
Now, whey protein – sometimes referred to as the fast protein – is easily digested and used by your body.
This means that you may get a higher dose of essential amino acids (essential due to your bodies inability to produce them), therefore enabling your body to use them for things such as increased muscle strength, muscle mass, and size.
Casein, on the other hand, is considered by many as the slow acting protein. The reason for this: it digests at a much slower rate.
This allows for a slow release of amino acids into your blood, therefore allowing for a slower absorption of those amino acids.
Now, there is one added benefit to casein: it is higher in the amino acid glutamine, which is a very important amino acid when you’re exercising.
Both taken together may give you the greatest improvements in performance, muscle strength, and size, as well, as in recovery.
Milk for Recovery
The whole point to pre and post-workout meal selection is to get as much nutrition in to prevent muscle breakdown during and after exercise.
The process –called catabolism – involves utilizing your muscle stores for energy, which breaks down the muscle and eliminates the hard work you just did at the gym.
In regards to post-workout, your trainer, coach, or someone else may have also recommended a low-fat milk based products for recovery.
And this would be a good idea. Why?
Milk contains the right mixture of carbs to proteins (should be 4:1 ratio) which could enable you to better replenish your used glycogen stores.
And, it provides the essential nutrients for building stronger, leaner muscle tissue.
Take Home Message
Pre and post workout nutrition is important for successful recovery and replenishment of lost nutrients.
Not only are you providing your body with better hydration, but you are also replenishing your body of lost glycogen (sugar) and also providing the building blocks for making stronger, bigger muscles.
Although a low-fat milk or even a chocolate milk may do the trick, the use of whey and casein proteins may also be a good way to replenish your body of the nutrients it has lost.
You may want to utilize immediately post-workout a whey protein supplement and save the casein for overnight in order to maximize your post-workout anabolic window.
This may improve your recovery, plus, give your body the right nutrition it needs to optimal performance.
