The 10 Unhealthiest Foods of 2018-2019
…Avoid These Foods To Trim Your Waistline and Cut Down On Your Disease Risk!
By Kevin DiDonato MS, CES—Level 1 Certified Precision Nutrition and Certified Personal Trainer
You know what I love? I love all new things…
New car smells…fresh, new sheets….the hottest phone to hit your carrier…
The simple fact is:
New things just seem to be better. They have a certain air about them that puts everything else into a separate category.
I even enjoy the new, super-easy and convenient way to shop—all online with curbside pickup.
How simple can life get?
But I will admit, there are certain “new things” that I can’t stand—and neither should you. When we go to the grocery store and we see a “new product,” a new soup…a new type of bread…or something else that comes from a big name food company.
We flip over the package to compare the “new product’ to the old version, and we immediately drop what we’re holding (like at the end of Usual Suspects when the coffee mug drops slowly to the floors).
The “new product” we were going to buy, for a BUCK more I might add, is basically the same product, just with different packaging.
The ingredients are the same…and it’s the same unhealthy product that we’ve been avoiding for so long.
But here’s a little secret you may not know—or realize:
Food manufacturers have been doing this simple practice for YEARS—without us even noticing.
Now, to help you wade through all the noise, we are going to give you a list of the top 10 unhealthiest foods of 2018.
There’s plenty more than 10…but you may not ever go shopping again if you saw the full list.
Where to begin…
The Top 10 Unhealthiest Foods of 2018…
Food manufacturers have been pulling the wool over our eyes for years. Each year, they come out with some NEW product…complete with new labeling and marketing, trying to get us to buy the product.
They throw out terms like, “organic,” “no GMO’s,” and “no artificial ingredients” only to find out is the same as the older brand of the product.
We were surprised that a lot of the food products on this list, may be lurking in the dark corners of our kitchen cabinets, pantry, or even or our refrigerator, just waiting for its chance to take our health hostage.
Let’s take a look at some of the worst foods that came out in 2018—and some staples that you may turn to every week that could be leading to deadly health issues:
1. Thin Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies
This one comes from a package that talks about a farm…but there is nothing wholesome about this product.
This is one of my parents’ favorite cookies. They rationalize it as being “healthy” because it has “thin” in the name.
But let’s face it; even if the cookie is thin, it’s still a cookie. And that means there plenty of SUGAR and nasty trans-fats that could ruin our health.
This “thin” cookie still packs a wallop with 140 calories, 6 grams of fat, 130 grams of sodium and a whopping 6 grams of sugar—all in just 2 thin cookies.
We did ourself a favor, and got rid of them as fast as we could.
2. Cheddar Havarit Mac and Cheese
I love cheese. I love mac and cheese…
…but definitely not this kind! Even though this product contains no artificial ingredients, it still packs roughly 20% of our recommended sodium intake into one serving.
And guess what? There are four servings in the box! That means we have 4x the sodium you would normally need for the day if we were to eat the entire box.
In one serving, you’re looking at 310 calories, 550 mgs of sodium, 45 grams of sugar, and 10 grams of fat.
Trust my word for it, our heart and waistlines will thank us if we avoid buying this type of mac and cheese.
3. Chocolate Salted Caramel Mug Mix
Sometimes my wife wants a little dessert at night. So I tend to make her a mug brownie or cookie.
And they are delicious and made from scratch. But we can also buy premade mug recipes in the baking section at your local grocery store.
Just one mug cake contains 350 calories, 7 grams of fat, 6 grams of sugar, and 210mg of sodium.
Add this mug cup to our list of the top dirty offenders.
4. Vegan Banana Bread
Here’s a great way that one company uses the term “vegan” to make their banana bread sound healthier.
However, one slice of this bread could send our blood sugar through the roof. Just 2oz. of this vegan bread contains a whopping 17grams of sugar, 210 calories, and 9grams of fat.
This “vegan” bread (they’re trying to capitalize on the latest buzz word), would be best left on the shelf.
5. Coconut Almond Chocolate Yogurt
Yes, yogurt is good for us. It gives us protein, healthy fats, and probiotics that could improve our gut health.
But here’s the only problem with this particular brand:
While most companies are moving away from high-sugar yogurts, this one is still packing it in.
In just one container, this food tops out at 270 calories, 15 grams of fat, and 23grams (yes, 23) of sugar.
Plus, all the sugar that is added to this product may actually degrade and KILL the probiotics that are naturally found in the yogurt.
6. Minter Wonderland
This particular ice cream brand may be a staple in your home. In fact, it’s one of the best ice creams around--some New Englander’s will tell you.
But here’s the skinny on this sugar-packed treat in just half a cup serving:
270 calories, 15 grams of fat, and 24 grams of sugar. Not the best choice to enjoy during the long winter months.
7. Mango Chicken and Coconut Rice
If we’re looking for a fast option, we may turn to those packaged frozen dinner and meals to satisfy our hunger when we are on the run—while keeping our weight loss on our radar.
However, if it says “lean” on the front, we may want to run far away. Most pre-packaged meals contain far too much sodium for one person to handle.
Even though the package calls it “lean” and it’s advertised to help us lose weight, think about what we’re getting in each meal:
330 calories, 6 grams of fat, 620mg of sodium, and 50grams of carb (of which 14 grams are sugar).
Not the “leanest” meal option out there.
8. Tropical Lime Salad Shake Up
I am going to be honest with you…
If we’re going to eat a salad, we would assume that it will have greens, veggies, some sort of protein, and some topping on the side.
But this shake up salad contains almost as much sugar as a candy bar—which could send our energy skyrocketing for a couple hours, only to come crashing down faster than a sinking ship.
Plus, this salad packs in the calories. Here’s how this new product weighs in against your homemade salad:
230 calories, 7 grams of fat, 26grams of sugar that makes up the 41 grams of carbs, and 270mg of sodium.
9. Gluten Free Rotini
Pasta shouldn’t be on this list—especially one that is gluten-free.
But here we are. Although this pasta contains ZERO sugars, there is something even worse going on with this pasta.
In order to get the gluten-free flours to bind together, this company uses trans-fat alternative oils.
This could add dangerous trans-fats to our diet, which could spike inflammation, lead to cancer, and raise our risk for a heart attack.
10. Beef Franks in a Blanket
This company has been in business for years. The package has remained the same, but the product itself may have taken on a whole new persona over the years.
Although this brand is kosher, they sure do add lots of sodium to the product, which could spike our blood pressure to unhealthy levels.
Overall, this product contains, in just 5 pieces, 310 calories, 25 grams of fat, and 590mg of sodium.
Although there are many other brands, products, and “new” things that have hit the supermarket shelves, these 10 foods should be avoided if we want to stay health, strip away belly fat, and maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
What To Take From This List of 10 Foods…
Although new can sometimes be better, when it comes to “new” foods, we may want to double check the label before eating it.
Not everything new is good. In fact, some new things may:
- Be very similar to older versions of the product, just with new marketing and labeling
- Contain artificial ingredients, high levels of sugar and sodium, and could be filled with trans-fats, making it a very unhealthy food.
- Use popular buzz words, like gluten-free, non-GMO, vegan, which could falsely lead the buyer to believe the product is healthier for them—it’s not.
- Contain the same, if not more, calories than the original version, making it a fat trap in disguise.
- Lead to weight gain, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer due to unhealthy ingredients found hidden in these foods.
- Contain unhealthy trans-fats, therefore putting your heart health at risk.
There are plenty more foods that could make this list. If you have these 10 foods, or are thinking about buying them, consider something healthier.
Or, think about making it yourself! That way you may be able to save yourself some calories, a few grams of sugar, and plenty of nasty fats that could eventually lead to weight gain, higher inflammation, and a higher risk for developing chronic diseases.
