Is Being Single Going To KILL You?
Okay, I have to tell you, I have read and heard a lot of strange things in my life.
But none as strange as this!
And for those of you who are single – both men AND women – you may want to take note, because this news may be, well, shocking to
say the least.
Okay, so you already know about heart disease and how dangerous it can be if left untreated.
And that most people attribute heart disease to a poor diet, lack of exercise, gender, and genetics,
Correct?
Well, you may be able to add in a new category.
And let me tell you, it’s NOT one that I would have thought of…
Relationship Status and Heart Attack Risk
Previous studies have shown that being single – or unmarried – may be associated with a higher risk for acute coronary syndrome.
Acute coronary syndrome refers to any number of symptoms that leads to blockages of the arteries to your heart.
A good example would be chest pain as a major symptom.
Common causes of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is ST-elevated heart attack (very serious and often times fatal), non-ST elevated heart attacks, and unstable angina (unstable pressure in the chest).
Now, researchers wanted to see if socio-demographics (in this case being single or married) increased the risk for acute coronary syndrome.
Here’s what they found:
Unmarried men and women were at higher risk for ACS than married men and women in the same age groups.
Also, in the 28 day period (period where they monitored people for heart attacks) 26 percent of married men, 42 percent of previously married men, and 51 percent of SINGLE men had – or died – from a heart attack.
And for the ladies, 20 percent of married women, 32 percent of previously married women, and 43 percent of SINGLE women had or died from a heart attack in the 28 day period.
Now, isn’t that interesting data on marriage (although the divorce rate is high)!
They concluded:
“Single living and/or being previously unmarried increases the risk of having a heart attack and worsens its prognosis both in men and women regardless of age. Most of the excess mortality appears already before hospital admission and seems not to be related to differences in treatment of acute coronary syndrome.”
Unusual Way to Prevent Heart Attacks
Although a poor diet and exercise may play a very large role in the development of heart disease – more specifically heart attacks – there may be other confounding factors as well.
Now, as unusual as this study may seem, there may be other myths regarding “broken” heart syndrome and others that may increase the risk for heart attacks or premature death.
According to this study, being married may decrease your risk for dying from acute coronary syndrome – which is a combination of many different cardiac factors – which could possibly increase your longevity.
Things to consider when you want to reduce your risk:
• Eat a diet full of fiber rich fruits and vegetables
• Eat plenty of wild-caught fatty fish
• Eat oats and sprouted grain breads
• Look for healthy fat options (found in olive oil, coconut oil/milk, avocados, and others)
• Consider taking a omega-3 fatty acid supplement such as Krill oil
Including these things to your daily meal plan may reduce your risk and could better your overall heart health.
But there is one factor that you need to consider when dealing with heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure, or altered blood levels.
And that would have to do with your cholesterol.
The fact is: 50 percent of people who had a heart attack also had NORMAL cholesterol levels.
Now, most people who have their cholesterol “under control” may find they may still be at risk for developing heart disease.
But, Dr. Walsh has some interesting information that he feels you NEED to know about.
And it may just save your life…
