STRANGE Fat Burning Nutrient Found In These Common Foods

By Kevin DiDonato MS, CSCS, CES

There’s a new fat fighter in town and it goes by the name of melatonin.

This nutrient – commonly used for better sleep, has been shown in a new study to deposit a fat burning FAT into your system.

And this could result in BIGGER fat loss results.

Melatonin and Beige Fat

You may have heard of brown fat cells and how these specialized cells increase thermogenesis and energy expenditure.

You may also have heard that beige cells – and intermediate fat cells between white and brown fat cells – may also increase energy expenditure by burning calories instead of storing them.

Now, new research shows that fruits and vegetables that are rich in melatonin may actually help “brown” white fat cells, therefore increasing energy expenditure.

Unlike beige and brown fat cells, white fat cells store fatty acids and release powerful fat loss hormones.

However, the beige and brown fat cells work by using calories for energy, due to the higher concentration of mitochondria found in the cells.

This also allows the cells to use the energy without storing them like you would find in white fat cells.

The results of the study show that “oral melatonin drives WAT into a brown fat-like function in ZDF rats.”

Food Sources of Melatonin

There are plenty of foods that contain adequate levels of this powerful molecule.

Foods such as almonds, walnuts, tart cherries, tart cherry juice, rolled oats, asparagus, and ginger root are all great sources of melatonin.

Including more of these foods may boost your intake of melatonin, therefore possibly increasing the conversion of white fat cells to beige, or even to brown fat cells.

And this could go a long way towards fat loss and overall weight maintenance.
