Reversing The Damage From Junk Food
There is a growing problem in this country – and no – this time it isn’t focused solely on weight.
The introduction of junk food – foods with higher refined carbohydrates and have higher fat intakes – are destroying the health of children and adults everywhere.
Yes, increased intake of junk food is related to weight and fat gain…
But it is also related to increasing inflammation levels and damage and destruction to the cells in your body.
Although all cells are affected, there is one area that poses a major concern as we get older…
Your brain health!
Now, previously, the thought was that neurogenesis – the process of making neurons from specialized cells – was limited to when you were developing in your mom
But fast-forward to today, and recent discoveries have shown that neurogenesis actually does happen in the adult brain.
And that diet and other factors play a large role in the development of this process.
A diet rich in refined carbohydrates and a higher fat intake has been shown to slow or halt the process of neurogenesis completely. But there may be one food that could block the harmful effects…
Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Brain Health
By far, the biggest cause for inflammation happens to come from the foods you eat.
In fact, foods that are filled with refined carbohydrates and higher fat contents seem to be the ones that may be most responsible.
Now, when inflammation increases in your body – a series of reactions occur, with the end result being an immune response to the affected area.
Although it can happen anywhere in your body, when chronic, internal inflammation targets your brain and brain cells, there may be damage to neurons and other cells that are vital for sensory input and to deliver important messages to the rest of your body.
And of course, inflammation also may lead to increased weight and fat gain!
Now, researchers have determined that omega-3 fatty acids – yes, the same fats found in oily fish and omega-3 supplements – may slow down the process, therefore having a positive impact on brain health.
Here’s what they found:
First, they analyzed over 180 different studies and came to some interesting conclusions.
They also found that omega-3 fatty acids may halt the damaging effects of a junk food (refined carbohydrates and higher fat content) when it comes to inflammation in the brain cells.
And, they found that omega-3 fatty acids may mimic the effects of a calorie-restricted diet, therefore possible reducing inflammation in your body.
The authors noted that omega-3 fatty acids may be able to be incorporated directly into the cell membrane in your brain cells.
And that this may lead to omega-3 fats having a direct impact on function, structure, and other important aspects of brain health.
They concluded:
“Exploration of the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on neurogenic brain regions may encourage development of new rational therapies in the fight against obesity.”
Another Benefit of Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids – which are commonly found in fatty, oily fish and fish and krill oil supplements – may provide a host of benefits to your health.
They have been shown to improve heart health, eye health, reproductive health, and even brain health.
And now, omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce the harmful effects of junk food on the development of brain cells.
If you want to put your brain health on the right track, then including omega-3 fatty acids into your daily routine may be a start in the right direction.
