Coffee vs. Your Brain (1 surprising result)
For those of you who still drink diet soda religiously, this article may change your life!
And, if you’re not a coffee drinker, then this article may also change your life.
You may have heard how bad depression can be and how it can affect your life or the lives of everyone around you.
Now, most people think that depression may be caused by a traumatic event or that they simply were born with it.
And both of these scenarios may be true!
But there is more to depression than meets the eye.
For instance, some studies have shown that people with lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids – specifically DHA - circulating in their blood and in their brain tissue, then the higher their chance for developing depression - amongst other conditions - is.
But there are many other dietary changes that may add or contribute to depression…
Diet Soda, Coffee, and Depression
Are you a person who is trying to lose weight but just can’t commit to getting rid of your favorite carbonated beverages?
Do you consume diet soda because everywhere you look added sugar and extra calories are deemed bad for weight loss?
Do you frequently experience times of moodiness, the “baby” blues, or just don’t feel like your vibrant self?
In today’s high-paced world, sometimes it hard to slow down and enjoy your life to the fullest.
There are deadlines that need to be met…
Family or social obligations that are always popping up…
Or you just wake up in the morning on the wrong side of the bed and can’t get out of your own way!
Now for some people, these symptoms may not last very long.
But for others, these symptoms may be something they deal with ALL THE TIME.
And they are not alone!
Current statistics show that one out of every 100 people - over the age of 18 – may suffer from some type of depression at some point in their lives.
And, that most people diagnosed with SEVERE depression are usually diagnosed in their mid to late 20’s or early 30’s!
Depression may be mild, moderate, or even severe depending on the person.
The fact is: depression is the NUMBER 1 cause of disability in the US for people between the ages of 15 and 44.
Now, back to how your diet and the drinks that you consume may lead to depression!
You may already know that diet soda may lead to cravings for sugar, increases in your weight, and even an increased risk for cancer.
On the other hand, coffee has been linked to greater fat burn, alertness, better performance, and better moods.
But what this study found will truly SHOCK YOU!
The Study
A new study, that will be presented later this year, shows some interesting information on the different drinks most commonly consumed by adults in the US – and around the world- and how their role in depression.
Here is a quick breakdown of what they observed:
This study showed that people who drank more than FOUR cups of their favorite weight loss beverage – diet soda – had a 30 percent higher risk for developing depression.
And that consuming diet fruit punch more than FOUR times per day, showed a 38 percent higher risk for developing depression.
Now, for your favorite drink – coffee!
For those who drank FOUR cups of coffee per day were 10 percent less likely to develop depression compared to no coffee at all!
What did they conclude?
“Our research suggests that cutting down on sweetened diet drinks or replacing them with unsweetened coffee may naturally help lower your depression risk.”
Of course more studies are needed – and in no way should this be considered a treatment option (so continue your meds) – but this may provide future studies on the effects of coffee and its role in preventing depression.
The TAKE-HOME Message
So you may be asking yourself, what’s the point of all this?
What you should be taking away from all this is very simple:
Reduce or eliminate your use of sweetened diet drinks such as diet soda, diet fruit juice, or even some diet teas.
This may not only decrease your risk for depression, but it could also improve other aspects of your health.
You should replace those unhealthy diet drinks with water or, according to this study, unsweetened coffee.
This could lower your chances of developing depression.
But there is one other thing that you could add to your plan. And it may be pretty powerful – not only for its effects on brain health and depression – but for other areas of health as well.
