One Important Lesson I Have Learned

By Kevin DiDonato MS, CSCS, CES

Today, I learned an important lesson in heart health.

My dad was admitted to the hospital after suffering what they diagnosed as a TIA – transient ischemic stroke.

Now, although he was lucky, there are many people around the world that don’t fare nearly as well.

In fact, recent statistics (2008) show that nearly 17.3 million people died from heart disease which represents 30 percent of ALL global deaths.

And, over 9 million people die each year from high blood pressure, of which 51 percent of those deaths are associated with strokes, and 45 percent are associated with coronary artery disease.

Now, current research shows that omega-3 fatty acids are protective to your heart.

And, a new study shows, omega-3 fatty acids may prevent heart disease-related sudden death.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Heart Health

For years, doctors, health care professionals, cardiologists, and even trainers have been stressing the importance of getting enough omega-3 fats.

The reason: They may be extremely beneficial to heart health, as well as other aspects of your health.

They have been shown to:

• Lower blood pressure
• Increase good cholesterol (HDL)
• Improve vascular health
• Decrease inflammation
• Decrease triglycerides

All these reasons are why omega-3 fatty acids are HIGHLY recommended for healthy people, as well as people who already have heart disease or risk factors for heart disease.

One aspect of heart health – sudden cardiac death – may be associated with people who may have heart disease.

And, the risk for sudden death and heart attacks does increase significantly for people who already have heart disease.

Now, a new study shows that omega-3 fatty acids may reduce death risk – especially if you already have heart disease.

Here’s what the researchers found in their meta-analysis:

First, they included any study that fell in their criteria (ONE gram of omega-3 fatty acids, per day for a year) which included 11 studies that involved over 15,000 people who were currently living with heart disease.

Although they found no statistically significant associations between omega-3 fatty acids and all-cause mortality or stroke, what they did find with other factors was pretty significant.

They found statistically significant protective effects were observed in relation to cardiac death, sudden death, and heart attacks.

They concluded: Overall, our results supply evidence that long-term effect of high dose omega-3 fatty acid supplementation may be beneficial for the onset of cardiac death, sudden death and myocardial infarction among patients with a history of cardiovascular disease.

More Positives for Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Although there is mounting evidence that omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial to heart health, many people still don’t get enough of this beneficial fat.

Omega-3 fatty acids have been linked to better heart health, lower cholesterol numbers, and lower blood pressure numbers.

And now, according to the results of this study, they have also been linked to a reduce risk for sudden death, cardiac death, and heart attacks.

Getting enough omega-3 fatty acids is important for every aspect of your health - especially when it comes to your heart health.
