The Research
Researchers aimed to see if increased omega-3 fatty acids protected nerve cells from damage associated with traumatic injury.
The subjects were genetically-altered mice that were able to increase circulating omega-3 fatty acids in their blood.
The results were AMAZING!
The researchers damaged nerve cells in the mice by starving the cells from oxygen or stretching them.
They found that increased omega-3 fatty acids provided significant protection of nerve cells in both types of injury.
But they did not stop there!
In some of the mice, they crushed their sciatic nerve.
They noticed, however, there was an accelerated recovery of function only 7 days after the injury.
They also determined omega-3 fatty acids may reduce muscle atrophy and weakness after the injury.
Simply put, they noticed that the muscles were stronger AFTER the injury due to protection of the nerve fibers.
They concluded that increased omega-3 fatty acids may offer significant protection against peripheral nerve injury.
Peripheral Nerve Injury
Damage to nerves may lead to reduced function with very little hope of recovery.
Researchers have been searching for a way to increase protection of nerve cells.
They also are searching for a way to increase the nerves' ability to regenerate - all with very little success.
Now, however, breakthrough research may prove that increased circulating omega-3 fatty acid levels may increase protection of nerve cells after injury.
Plus, omega-3 fatty acids may decrease muscle atrophy and weakness associated with nerve damage.
