It has been shown that lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids may lead to increased risk for inflammation and depression.
Now, according to the authors of this study, they feel strongly that increased omega-3 fatty acids levels may reduce inflammation in your body.
They attempted to investigate whether omega-3 fatty acid supplementation could reduce cytokine production and depression symptoms.
They recruited 138 healthy, middle-aged or older, overweight, and sedentary individuals for the study.
They performed a three-arm, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind four-month trial, utilizing either a 1.25 gram/day dose, 2.50 grams/day dose of an omega-3 fatty acids supplement, or a placebo.
The placebo was a mixture of fatty acids that mirrored the proportion of fatty acids that are commonly found in the American diet.
The researchers showed that serum IL-6 decreased by 10% and 12% respectively (1.25 g/day dose and 2.50 g/day dose) compared to the placebo, which increased IL-6 by 36%.
They also noted that the low- and high-dose omega-3 fatty acids were effective at reducing TNF-alpha by 0.2% and -2.3% compared to the placebo, which increased TNF-alpha by 12%.

TNF-alpha and IL-6 are pro-inflammatory cytokines, which have been implicated in increased inflammation in your body.
When they looked at depressive symptoms, there was very little change from baseline to the end of the trial, due to depressive symptoms being low at the beginning of the study.
They concluded that omega-3 fatty acids may reduce inflammation in overweight, sedentary, middle-aged and older adults, and thus could have broad health benefits.
They also noted in their conclusion that their data could provide a window into the ways in which omega-3 fatty acids may impact disease initiation, progression, and resolution.
Although this research is very exciting and displays a benefit to broad health benefits, the research needs to be further verified before omega-3 fatty acids could be considered a valid treatment option.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Your Health
Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to possess a wide range of health benefits.
They have been linked to improvements in heart health, diabetes care, eye health, and brain health.
Now, according to the results of this study, omega-3 fatty acids could reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which have been linked to increased inflammation.
