The 1 SNEAKY Trick To Lower Your Heart Attack Risk?
High plasma level of triglycerides has been linked to increased risk for heart disease.
In fact, one intervention of heart health is to reduce plasma triglyceride levels, therefore reducing your overall heart disease risk.
There are three mechanisms that result in high triglyceride levels: diet, conversion of carbohydrates into free fatty acids, and circulating non-esterified fatty acids.
It has been shown that circulating non-esterified fatty acids is the most crucial component to increased triglyceride levels in both normotriglyceridemic and hypertriglyceridemic individuals.
One method of lowering triglyceride levels is through the use of omega-3 fatty acids from fish, fish oil, and krill oil.
Omega-3 fatty acids, according to clinical studies, have been shown to reduce triglyceride levels.
In fact, some doses of omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce triglyceride levels by as much as 25 percent to 50 percent.
According to a new study published in Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, could potentially show the way that omega-3 fatty acids lower triglyceride levels in patients with insulin resistance.
Let me explain…
Triglyceride Development in Your Body
As previously mentioned, there are three factors that contribute to increased triglyceride levels.
Dietary intake, conversion of carbohydrates to free fatty acids, and circulating non-esterified fatty acids have been shown to raise triglyceride levels.
However, according to this study, circulating non-esterified fatty acids could contribute to the largest production of VLDL-triglycerides in your body.
The authors of this study explain how omega-3 fatty acids could lower triglyceride levels by reducing the production of non-esterified fatty acids, therefore reducing the transportation of fatty acids to the liver.
They show that non-esterified fatty acids are produced from the breakdown of fatty acids in adipose tissue through a process called lipolysis.
This process, with the help of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), frees fatty acids from your fat cells and transports them to your bloodstream for energy.
However, in cases of insulin resistance, this process worsens and increases it dramatically.
Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce this process by lowering inflammation in your fat cells, which could slow intracellular lipolysis, therefore halting the release of fatty acids.
Plus, the researchers also noted, that omega-3 fatty acids could increase extracellular (outside of the cell) fat breakdown in the heart, fat cells, and skeletal muscles by increasing the activity of the enzyme lipoprotein lipase.
They note that this process could enhance β-oxidation in the liver and skeletal muscle tissue, therefore lowering the levels of circulating fatty acids that are transported to your liver.
They conclude that omega-3 fatty acids could activate factors for different metabolic pathways that could be responsible for the lowering of plasma triglyceride levels.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Your Health
Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown beneficial in heart, eye, brain, and reproductive health.
One of the more concerning factors in regards to heart health is your triglyceride levels.
There are many different factors responsible for increasing your triglyceride levels, but none are as important as the levels of free fatty acids found in your blood.
According to this study, omega-3 fatty acids could lower triglycerides by reducing inflammation in your fat cells, therefore decreasing fatty acid release and transport to your liver.
A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids (through fish or a high quality omega-3 fatty acid supplement) could not only improve different aspects of health, but could lower your triglyceride levels, therefore promoting better heart health.
