How The Omega-3 Fatty Acids Can Benefit Your Immune System

DHA and Immunity
Recent studies have shown that DHA – one of the omega-3 fats – may be effective at reducing T-lymphocytes, which act, in conjunction with other cells, as your cells' first defense against foreign invaders.
However, the effects on other immune cells – namely B cells – have been an area not fully understood or studied.
Until now!
According to a new study, B cells are white blood cells that produce antibodies and other immune-fighting cells due to the presence of foreign invaders – such as the cold and flu bacteria.
They tested to see if DHA was able to enter into the B cell membrane, therefore enabling the DHA to enhance the B cell function – to destroy harmful bacteria.
Here’s what they found:
First, they found that the mice fed the DHA-enriched supplement showed increased activity in the B cells – meaning they produced more antibodies and were able to alert other cells of the harmful invaders.
They also noted, unlike previous findings associated with T cells, that the DHA did little to suppress the B cells, but instead, enhanced their function and increased their activity and immune- supporting abilities.
What did they conclude?
“These results support the hypothesis and an emerging concept that fish oil enhances B cell function in vivo.”
More DHA = Less Cold Symptoms?
Most people know the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, as important nutrients for heart health.
And they would be correct!
Omega-3 fatty acids have been used for many years as a way to lower total and LDL cholesterol, lower triglycerides, and boost HDL
levels; but, what they may not know is the omega-3 fatty acids are also useful for improving eye, brain, and joint health as well.
Now, according to this study, they may also have a new function – one that was previously unknown – in regards to boosting immune function and overall health.
DHA, this study suggests, may be able to improve the function of B cells, therefore allowing them to create more antibodies and boost their overall immune supporting functions.
By increasing your intake of fatty fish, a high quality omega-3 fatty acids supplement, or a DHA/EPA supplement, you may not only improve your overall health, but improve the function of your immune system as well.
