Omega-3 Fatty Acids Prevent Cognitive Decline In Middle Aged Adults
Aging has been associated with many ailments and problems.
From increased arthritis, loss of memory, eye sight decline, and cognitive decline, aging definitely can has its ups and down.
In fact, there are an increasing number of older adults who are diagnosed with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and cognitive decline than ever before.
However, more and more research is emerging on the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in fetal, older adult, and now middle aged adults (both men and women).
In fact, a study published in the Journal of Nutrition, has shown that DHA, one of the omega-3 fatty acids, could be beneficial in the brain development of middle aged adults.
Let me explain…
Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Brain Development
Research has shown that there may be a positive association between omega-3 fatty acids and brain development.
In fact, dietary intake of fish and n-3 PUFA (omega-3 fatty acids) has been shown to improve early brain development and now middle aged brain development, which may slow the onset or even lower your risk for cognitive decline as you age.
Much of the research has been geared to fetal and infant brain development and older adult brain development. There has been a lack of research done on middle aged adults and intake of omega-3 fatty acids.
Researchers aimed to determine there is an association between higher n-3 PUFA concentrations in phospholipids and different dimensions related to cognitive decline – especially as it relates to middle aged adults.
The researchers recruited 280 community dwelling participants who were between the ages of 35 and 54.
They ruled out participants according to specific criteria which included disease risk, anyone who had major neuropsychiatric disorders, and those who were taking fish oil supplements.
They assessed dietary biomarkers, which included the levels of ALA, EPA and DHA found in the serum phospholipids.
Also, the participants were subjected to a 75 minute neuropsychological exam prior to the study.
The researchers noted participants who had higher intakes of DHA showed marked improvements in non-visual reasoning, mental flexibility, working memory, and vocabulary, than did participants with lower DHA levels.
They also showed that DHA improvements in non-verbal reasoning and working memory stayed consistent even after adjusting for factors such as education and vocabulary.
However, they did note that ALA and EPA showed little improvements in the five dimensions of neuropsychological testing.
They concluded that out of all three omega-3 fatty acids (ALA, EPA, and DHA) DHA was associated with the highest improvements in cognitive scores in adults under the age of 55.
Although this research could hold promise for mental, cognitive and brain health, more research is needed to validate these findings.
However, the researchers did said that DHA could be related to brain health over the course of a lifetime, and that it could warrant further clinical studies to determine DHA effectiveness in preventing cognitive decline in old age.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Your Brain
Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids could be helpful at improving many different areas related to the health of our senior and baby boomer population.
Omega-3 fatty acids have also been shown to improve heart health, depression symptoms in the elderly, and even improve strength in the elderly population.
Now, according to this study, could show that omega-3 fatty acids, when administered in middle aged men and women, may actually reduce your risk for cognitive decline once you reach old age.
This research on omega-3 fatty acids could show promise, and although more research is needed, may provide a new preventative method to reduce age-related cognitive decline.
