Forgot Something? Research Shows Omega-3’s Potential Benefit On The Mind
Fish, Fish oil and Krill Oil are loaded with amazing nutrients that have been found helpful to optimal health - from lowering heart disease risk by increasing HDL cholesterol, to helping people lose excess weight. This natural ingredient has been linked to other benefits as well.

Aging causes many different systems in the body to start to decline. There is a decline in testosterone levels, decrease in muscle tissue, a decline in our balance, and a decrease in mental capacities. Not everyone experiences the same declines with aging, but these can be some common areas that start to decline with age.
Nursing homes and long-term care facilities will be busy over the course of time, because our population is slowly getting older. There are more and more people who are reaching the ripe age of 60 and above. Research shows some disturbing trends, though, for our senior population.
Depression can now be considered a risk factor in the elderly for early mortality. The nursing home blues are a common occurrence when a person who was once independent, now has to rely on someone else for simple necessities, like eating and bathing. This loss of independence can lead to depression, which sometimes leads to suicide.
Dementia, another disease that affects the elderly population, reduces the person’s ability to remember simple tasks, or people, or even what they did five minutes ago. The brain slowly starts to decline, resulting in loss of short-term memory and the ability to think clearly and remember. Fish oil is plentiful in rich Omega-3 fatty acids, especially in the form of EPA and DHA, but also in n-3 PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acids) which has shown promising research in decreasing age-related Dementia and depression.

In research done by Gua et al., they concluded that a diet rich in omega-3s and n-3 PUFA has been shown to decrease age-related dementia cases. Gua, and his team, researched people over the course of three years in the elderly Chinese population on dietary intake of fish for levels of DHA and plasma levels of DHA.
They also concluded that older adults who ate more fish, tended to have decreased levels of dementia and less cognitive decline in community settings.
Other research points to the benefits of n-3 PUFA, a type of polyunsaturated fat that is commonly found in fish and fish oil supplements. Guyot et al. over the course of 13 years, concluded that people with a diet rich in n-3 PUFA, demonstrated a decrease in cognitive complaints. Cognitive complaints may be an indicator of future health implications, especially early stages dementia or other cognitive disorders.
To further reinforce n-3 PUFA effects on depression, Rondanelli et al. concluded that diets containing high levels of n-3 PUFA reduced the occurrence of depressive states in elderly females. They also concluded that there was an increase in patients' quality of life in the nursing home. Secondary to the improvements in depression, they also found increased heart healthy benefits from the increased intake of n-3 PUFA.
A growing area of research is omega-3 and n-3 PUFA found in Fish Oil and Krill oil have been beneficial in the treatment of depression. More research needs to be conducted, but the research that is currently out shows promising results. Research done by Logan et al. concludes that a dose, as low as 1 gram per day, has been shown beneficial in helping with mood and depression. However, they stress that more research needs to be done for the exact mechanism, but they do conclude that EPA may be the crucial nutrient to help with mood and stability.
Fish, fish oil and Krill oil supplements can provide a person with high levels of both DHA and EPA which have been shown effective in age-associated cognitive decline. If you do not like to eat fish, then a supplement that has the right levels of Omega 3 fatty acids in the form of DHA and EPA, that also has high levels of n-3 PUFA, will possibly get you the same benefit as if you were eating fish.
