5 Things Your Spit Wants To Tell You (but can't)
…Discover How The Color Of Your Spit Could Determine Your Health Risk!
By Kevin DiDonato, MS, CES—Level 1 Certified Precision Nutrition and Certified Personal Trainer
Your body is a pretty amazing device. If you didn’t know, you can tell a whole heck of a lot about your health just by looking at specific areas of your body.
For example, your feet can tell you if you have a blockage in your lower leg…your tongue can tell you a whole host of different issues that may be occurring…and your eyes can do the same.
I know it’s not the same as pricking your finger and seeing a drop (or steady stream) of blood…
…but specific aspects of your body can alert you to many different health issues that may be cropping up.
From your pee to how bad your farts smell…
Your body does an amazing job. One area that is often overlooked when it comes to determining how healthy you are is…
SPIT! Yes, the substance that is in your mouth really can tell you if there are serious issues that may have cropped up—and you don’t even know it.
Let’s take a closer look at how…
Your Spit Can Reflect Issues Going On Inside Your Body…
For most people, (minus athletes who spit all the time), there's a good chance that you don’t spit. You simply swallow your saliva and call it a day.
But it may be time to start spitting just a little bit more so you can tell just how healthy you are.
In fact, a professor at Ohio State University points out that changes in spit color, texture, how much or how little, and other factors could determine if there is something wrong in your mouth or even within your whole body.
(We all know spit can tell genetics disease-risk and ancestry, but can also highlight your current health and disease risk.)
Let’s take a look at what you can tell just by looking at your spit:
1. White or Cream Colored
If your spit is white or cream colored, there’s a good chance you may have a yeast infection in your mouth.
Oral thrush, which is the technical term, builds up on your tongue, cheeks, and roof of your mouth.
This type of infection comes from the fungus Candida Albicans, and most people have some degree of this fungus living in their bodies.
However, oral thrush is more common in babies, older adults, people with a weakened immune system, or those who may excessively use mouthwash, or smokers.
People with diabetes may also have cases of oral thrush.
2. Loss of Saliva
As you get older, it may be common that your production of spit (saliva) starts to drop off. However, too much of a drop off could be a sign that some systematic diseases could be afoot.
For example, Sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune condition that attacks the salivary glands, resulting in less saliva.
If you notice that you have less and less saliva on a daily basis—and hydrating yourself doesn’t do the trick—then you may want to seek a doctor’s opinion.
3. Blood Sugar Levels
I bet you didn’t know, but your saliva can be a tool to measure things like blood sugar, electrolytes, proteins, and other biochemical markers.
In fact, many of the markers you can get on a blood test, you may also be able to get from saliva—just in lower concentrations.
And this means that you may be able to determine if someone has diabetes or not. Diabetes is associated with dry mouth, inflamed and bleeding gums, and of course the fruity breath smell.
However, you may also be able to get a blood sugar reading from your saliva, therefore you could determine how high your blood sugar is and if you’re suffering from undiagnosed diabetes.
4. Genetic Testing
Everyone knows that you can test for certain genetic issues before a baby is born by taking a swab of DNA from your cheek and also the saliva that is attached to it.
And as more and more people are looking to discover more about their past, spitting in a tube is a much cheaper and better option to determine your family tree.
But it’s more than just finding out about long-lost family…
It also gives clues to your risk for impending diseases, such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s disease.
You can submit your saliva to any one of these genetic testing sites and determine your future (if any) health risks that you could be facing.
5. HIV
Back in the 80s, there was an explosion in cases of HIV. It was huge and scary for those who didn’t understand the disease.
Now, as time as gone on and there is more research, we know more about HIV and AIDS than ever before.
It may come as a surprise, but you may be able to detect HIV antibodies in your saliva. There are plenty of home-care kits out there that could determine if you have HIV or not.
If a positive test comes back, then a blood test is usually the next step to confirm, which then will start the treatment process as soon as possible.
Even though you can’t get blood pressure readings or cancer diagnoses from your saliva, it doesn’t mean that it’s not in the works.
In fact, as research and technology gets better, some (if not most) diseases could be detected by your saliva.
The Take Home Message
Your body is a pretty amazing device. It can tell you all sorts of things about your health—even if you feel great or don’t suspect anything is wrong.
But:
There are certain parts of your body that, just by looking at it, can tell you some surprising things about your health.
Your feet, skin, hair, eyes, pee, poop…even your breath can give you tell-tale signs that something is not right in your body.
And so can your spit. Shockingly, your spit may be a “window to your health” and could alert you to issues that could be impacting your oral health or your system-wide health.
But you must BEWARE…
Although your spit could tell you important information, like high blood sugar levels, it’s important to understand your risk. There are many people that may be suffering from diseases, such as Type 2 Diabetes, and not even know it.
