Walnuts, which are full of healthy fats, are considered one of the best nuts for heart health.
They have also been shown to reduce the activity and damage caused by free radicals or reactive oxygen species due to the extremely high concentration of antioxidants in this tree nut.
Walnuts are full of F-A-T, but the fat is one of the more beneficial types of fat.
They are full of polyunsaturated fats, which have been shown in research, to improve heart health by altering cholesterol levels.
However, did you know that walnuts are not only great for heart health, weight loss, and a great source of vitamins, but they have also been shown beneficial to the health of a man’s sperm?
According to a new study published in the journal Biological Reproduction, shows that walnuts, when included as part of a Western diet, could improve the health of sperm in young men.
Let me explain…
Walnuts and Sperm Health
Walnuts, when part of a healthy diet, have been shown beneficial to improving health and stimulating weight loss.
Even though they contain a high amount of calories in a small serving (185 calories in one ounce), they are chock full of vitamins, minerals, and essential fats that are necessary for normal cell development.
Walnuts contain a high amount of fat (18 grams per one ounce) but the majority of the fat comes from polyunsaturated fats, which have been shown effective at lowering cholesterol.
Now, according to the authors of this study, walnuts when incorporated into a Western diet, could improve the sperm quality in young, healthy men.
The researchers wanted to determine if adding 75 grams per day of walnuts to an existing Western diet would be beneficial to sperm quality and overall sperm health.
They performed a randomized, parallel two group study that involved 117 men between the ages of 21 and 35 who regularly consumed a Western type diet.
The researchers were looking for improvements from baseline to the end of 12 weeks in serum parameters and any sperm abnormalities after walnuts were introduced.
Other parameters they looked at included: sperm fatty acids profiles, sex hormone levels, and folate levels.
Their data showed that the group who consumed the walnuts as part of their diet showed improvements in sperm vitality, motility, and morphology compared to the control group (group who consumed a Western diet without added tree nuts) who showed no change.
Also, the researchers showed that serum fatty profile improved with increases in both plasma concentrations of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, compared to the control group who only showed an increase in omega-3 fatty acids from alpha-linoleic acid.
From their work, the researchers concluded that walnuts, when added to a typical Western diet, could improve sperm vitality, motility, and morphology in young men.
Although this research is new, it still needs to be validated by other research before it can be considered a vital option in sperm health. However, it does show that walnuts should be a staple in your diet, not only to improve the health of your sperm, but also improvements in overall general health areas.
Walnuts for Health
Walnuts, when consumed with a healthy diet, could be an extremely rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, which could be beneficial to your health.
In fact, the omega-3 fatty acids found in walnuts have been shown to improve heart health, cholesterol levels, and even aid in weight loss.
However, according to the results of this study, walnuts could be an important food to include in a man’s diet in order to improve the health, vitality, and motility of sperm.
Including more nuts, walnuts in particular, could be beneficial to your overall health and wellness, but more important in benefiting men’s health.
