A few years ago, ephedra was the main supplement used for weight loss, but was stripped off the market, due to unsafe increases in blood pressure and heart rate.
If you remember, there were many cases of adverse cardiac issues, and a few deaths related to ephedra usage.
Due to the serious health concerns regarding ephedra, the FDA banned its use, leaving many avid exercisers looking for something to boost weight loss and athletic performance.
Enter Citrus Aurantium, also known as bitter orange, into the weight loss market in 1997 as a way to boost weight loss without adversely affecting heart rate and blood pressure.
Current research has shown that, when taken in the right amounts and doses, that citrus aurantium is considered safe for users, without adverse health reactions.
The main proalkaloid in citrus aurantium is p-synephrine, which may boost metabolism and stimulate greater weight loss.
This derivative was investigated and considered safe for increasing metabolism without adversely affecting heart rate or blood pressure.
The results of this study published in the International Journal of Medical Science, could show that citrus aurantium alone and in combination with other ingredients, may stimulate metabolism without adversely affecting blood pressure or heart rate.
Let me explain…
Citrus Aurantium and Weight Loss
Citrus aurantium, which has been shown to stimulate beta-cells, may increase thermogenesis and promote greater weight loss through increased lipolytic (fat burning) activity.
Not only does it stimulate weight loss, but it has also been shown to boost athletic performance, suppress appetite, and increase lean muscle mass.
The authors of this study wanted to see if citrus aurantium, alone and in combination with other ingredients, could affect resting metabolism, resting heart rate, blood pressure, and mood and energy levels.
They recruited 50 people who were randomly assigned to one of five groups: a control group, a citrus aurantium group, and three other groups (citrus aurantium and other ingredients) and juice.
The participants were assessed at baseline and once again 75 minute after ingesting their juice.
Researchers noticed a decrease of 30 calories from baseline to 75 minutes post-ingestion in the control group.
The citrus aurantium group showed an increase of 65 calories at 75 minutes compared to the control group.
There were subsequent increases in metabolism in the other groups.
In all the groups (citrus aurantium alone or in combination with other ingredients) there was no adverse reactions to blood pressure or heart rate.
They concluded that, with their unusual findings (increase in thermogenesis without an increase in heart rate or blood pressure), this may warrant more long-term studies to determine its value as a weight loss ingredient.
Weight Loss and Your Health
For some, weight loss may be very easy. Make a couple of small changes to your diet and include a little more activity, and the fat melts away.
For most people, however, having the added advantage of weight loss supplements may boost their metabolism, which could improve overall fat burning.
The use of citrus aurantium, which was introduced in 1997, has been used to boost fat burning without the dangerous side effects of higher blood pressure and elevated blood pressure.
According to the results of this study, supplements containing citrus aurantium, alone and in combination with other ingredients, may be effective at boosting weight loss and thermogenesis, without increasing blood pressure or heart rate.
Citrus aurantium may be an effective weight loss ingredient for not only boosting metabolism, but for suppressing appetite, increasing lean muscle mass, and improving mood and energy levels.
