Bye-bye pasta. It’s been nice knowing you.
For years, people have told you—and me—that pasta is BAD for your health…
…will cause any number of chronic diseases
…and will make you FAT and heavier than ever before.
The research was there…
The research showed that eating a diet high in complex carbs—like pasta—would eventually lead to weight gain and a ballooning of your waistline.
But:
Are they right? Will pasta, like research says, lead to weight gain, increased BMI, or obesity?
Well, the results are in and the answer is…
Pasta and Fat Gain
Pasta, which has been a staple in the Mediterranean diet, has gotten a bad reputation for many years.
People strongly believe that eating too much pasta—or even eating pasta at all—could cause you to gain weight and body fat.
But does the research stack up?
The answer is no, the research does NOT show that pasta may cause you to gain weight or body fat.
Surprised? I bet you are!
The latest study, this time out of Italy, shows some pretty shocking and pleasantly surprising findings regarding pasta and weight gain and obesity.
The researchers looked at over 22,000 people (14,000+ from one part of Italy and the rest from all over Italy) to see if pasta intake could lead to fat gain, overweight or obesity.
After taking measurements (weight, height, and waist and hip circumference), they looked at the amount of pasta that was eaten (corrected for either total energy intake or body weight).
They discovered that those who ate a lot of pasta, 1) had much better adherence to the Mediterranean type diet, and 2) had a better BMI measurement in women.
They also noted that those who enjoyed pasta more frequently, not only had better BMI measurements, but also had lower hip and waist circumference (they lost INCHES)!
The researchers concluded from their work: “As a traditional component of MeD, pasta consumption was negatively associated with BMI, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio and with a lower prevalence of overweight and obesity.”
Simply put, those eating pasta had much lower BMI, waist, and hip circumference numbers and showed a much lower risk for becoming overweight or obese.
Conclusion
Everyone feels that pasta is a type of forbidden food that you can’t have if you’re trying to lose fat or weight in general.
But in reality, pasta may be a perfect food or losing weight and boosting your overall performance.
A recent study, piggybacking on the findings of a previous study shows that people who ate pasta had a better BMI and less girth around their waist and hips.
Plus, those who included pasta were more likely to stick with their diet compared to those who didn’t eat pasta.
For those who have avoided pasta because you felt that it may make you gain weight, rest easy knowing that this may NOT be the case.
In actuality, eating pasta may boost your overall weight loss and reduce the risk for developing overweight or obesity.
