Of course you already know that the foods you eat play an important role in everything from weight loss to chronic disease prevention.
And this is an important point for people who are looking to reduce their risk for the NUMBER ONE killer in the WORLD: heart disease.
But did you know that the TYPE of diet you eat may play an even larger role in heart disease prevention?
It’s true!
Now, there are hundreds – if not thousands – of diet books and videos on the market today, each promoting some sort of benefit either to weight loss or better health.
I am sure you’ve heard of some of them: Paleo, blood type diet, Atkins, Zone, the list goes on and on…
But one diet in particular – which has been extensively studied – may now provide evidence that it reduces, if not prevents, heart disease and heart disease development.
The BEST Diet for Heart Disease – better than DRUGS!
As you can see from the headline, THIS particular diet may be better than most drugs that are often prescribed to prevent heart disease
development.
But the interesting part: this diet has been around for a LONG TIME…
In fact, people in Italy, Spain, and other countries around them, have adopted this very type of diet many, many years ago.
The type of diet I am talking about is: the Mediterranean diet!
The highlights of this type of diet are as follows:
• High intake of extra-virgin olive oil, fruits, nuts, vegetables, and cereal
• Moderate intake of fish and poultry
• Low intake of dairy, red meat, processed meat, and sweets
• And wine in moderation, mainly with meals
Sounds like a diet you would like, doesn’t it?
Well, researchers wanted to see if a Mediterranean diet, highlighted with either increased intake of olive oil or nuts, would reduce the risk for heart disease in high-risk participants (although free of heart disease).
Here is what they found:
They found that an energy-unrestricted Mediterranean diet - supplemented with either olive oil OR nuts - was able to reduce the relative risk for heart disease by a whopping 30 percent!
They also found the participants to have good adherence to the program according to both self-reported results and biological biomarkers.
They also noted that there were 288 reported cardiac events, of which 96 were in the olive oil group, 83 in the nut group, and 109 in the control group.
They concluded:
“Among persons at high cardiovascular risk, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts reduced the incidence of major cardiovascular events.”
Another Way to Better Health
Most people looking to improve their health may start first with the foods they eat, the type of diet they are on, and starting an exercise program.
Now, all three are important aspects to improve health, lose weight, and reduce your risk for chronic diseases – especially heart disease.
However, ONE type of diet may be more important at reducing heart disease risk than all the others – and that would be the Mediterranean diet.
And a new study shows that this may be a smart idea for heart health improvements – especially when the diet is supplemented with either extra-virgin olive oil or nuts.
The take home message is this: a healthy diet may help prevent heart disease risk and could reduce future risk for cardiovascular related death.
Now, besides olive oil, there is another fat that may be just as important for improving heart health.
And it just happens to come from the deep blue sea!
