Resveratrol, a powerful polyphenol, is commonly found in the skin of grapes and red wine and has been shown to improve many different
parameters of health and wellness.
It has been shown to improve heart health (cardio-protective), skin health and improve eye health and your vision.
Let me explain…
Resveratrol
Resveratrol, a stilbenoid, which is commonly found in many plants, is produced by the enzyme resveratrol synthase and is used to protect plants from bacteria and other dangerous fungi.
Research into resveratrol and human health, shows that this powerful polyphenol could hold anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and could potentially counteract the effects of a high fat diet (in mice).
However, a new study released shows that Resveratrol could have powerful effects on insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance.
The Research
Researchers in New York aimed to see if Resveratrol could improve insulin sensitivity and improve vascular health in people with impaired glucose tolerance.
They recruited 10 subjects aged 75 or older who had some degree of impaired glucose tolerance.
They underwent a 4 weeks study, utilizing a dose of resveratrol of 1, 1.5 or 2 grams of Resveratrol following a standard meal.
They measured 3-hour glucose levels, insulin area under the curve (AUC), insulin sensitivity and secretion and endothelial function.
They noted the administration of one to two grams of resveratrol, resulted in improvements in most areas.
There was no change in fasting blood glucose but they did notice a drop in 3-hour insulin under the curve (AUC) after the meal.
They also showed improvements in post-meal endothelial function following supplementation with resveratrol.
They concluded that administration of a one to two gram dose of resveratrol could improve insulin sensitivity and post-meal plasma glucose levels in subjects that have impaired glucose tolerance.
Resveratrol
Resveratrol is a polyphenol which, research shows, could hold tremendous benefits to your cardiovascular and circulatory systems.
It could increase the health of blood vessels, aid in immune function and protect against oxidative stress due to damage caused by free radicals.
Now, according to research out of New York, Resveratrol could provide a new way to improve Diabetic health and well-being.
Further research is warranted, but this could lay the foundation for exciting new breakthroughs in the treatment of Diabetes.
