There is a very serious – often times – life-threatening condition that may occur when your liver doesn’t work the way it should, called hepatic encephalopathy.
When the liver is unable to do its job – filtering your blood - then there is a buildup of toxins that may occur in your bloodstream and circulate to areas such as your brain and other organs.
For example, when you eat a lot of protein, one of the by-products of the protein breakdown is ammonia.
Now, if ammonia is left in your blood, it may cause some serious and fatal reactions to occur – especially in your brain.
And what helps to break down food particles, therefore releasing those byproducts into the blood to be transported to your liver?
The tiny little bacteria that reside in your intestines, that’s what!
And, there is something else you should know…
Probiotics and Liver Health
Now, although this condition happens in people with chronic liver disease, it can come on suddenly and without warning in healthy people if damage to the liver occurs.
It can occur as an acute attack, which may be reversible. This disorder may start slowly and then gradually get worse over time. Or it can start off severe.
Some people who suffer from this disorder may become unconscious, unresponsive, or slip into a coma. When this occurs, the person suffering from it cannot care for themselves.
Now, studies have shown that probiotics – friendly bacteria that benefit the host – may reduce your chances of developing this condition.
How?
Probiotics may be able to reduce the number of microorganisms that create ammonia, therefore reducing the possibility of developing this disorder.
Here is what the study found:
First, researchers wanted to assess how many people developed hepatic encephalopathy after use of probiotics or without.
They found that twice as many patients developed this condition using the placebo than did with the probiotics.
And, after just three months of probiotic supplementation, there was a decrease in arterial ammonia levels found in the blood.
The study authors concluded from this study:
"Hepatic encephalopathy is an insidious disease that's caused by an accumulation of toxins in the blood that are normally removed by the liver. Treatment normally involves the use of antibiotics or laxatives to suppress the production of toxic substances in the intestine but there is still a great deal of room for improvement so it will be exciting to see the results of further studies to determine if clinicians have a new form of treatment on the cards."
And the conclusions of another study on probiotics stated this:
“Lactulose and probiotics are effective for secondary prophylaxis of HE in patients with cirrhosis.”
Another Benefit of Probiotics
Probiotics – which are live bacteria – may be beneficial to your overall health.
Numerous studies show that probiotics may be able to enhance your gut health, by repopulating or rebuilding the bacterial colony that already resides in your intestines.
Now, they have been shown to reduce or prevent the development of a very serious and sometimes fatal condition in your body.
When your liver is unable to process toxins from your bloodstream, there may be a buildup of those toxins which is harmful to your health.
One of those toxins happens to be ammonia.
And people who already have liver issues may be at a higher risk for developing this condition.
However, supplementation with probiotics may prevent the development of this condition, plus, reduce ammonia production by the bacteria in your body, according the recent studies.
And this may lead to better overall health and gut health.
Probiotics should be a necessary addition to anyone’s nutrition plan!
