Doctors, healthcare professionals, and others have long told you that the shape of your body is an important indicator of your health.
And they would be correct!
Most people fall in three different groups: “normal” shape, apple shape, or pear shape.
Healthcare professionals have harped for years in regards to apple shaped people having a higher risk for diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
And they may have told pear-shaped people that they are at a much lower risk for these diseases.
But are they wrong? Do pear-shaped people have just as much risk as apple-shaped people?
The answer to this question may be a resounding YES!
And now, a new study may poke some holes in the original theory of pear-shaped people having a lower risk for chronic diseases.
Shapes and Risk
Do you carry most of your weight in your belly as belly fat?
Or do you carry most of your weight around your butt, hips, and thighs?
Do you have a “pot” belly – you know, the protruding belly that hangs over your belt and is HARD?
By now, you know that carrying extra weight around your belly is not good for you.
Besides the fact that it makes it harder to bend over and reach the floor to tie your shoes…
Or that it makes it harder to climb stairs due to pain in your lower back or other joints!
Now, what you need to know is that most people who carry their weight in their belly region may have more of that fat as visceral fat – or a nasty, disease-causing type of fat.
And this is why apple-shaped people may be at a higher risk – all because of the amount of visceral fat you may have.
But pear-shaped people, on the other hand, carry most of their weight around their hips, butt, and thighs, which would cause you - and others – to believe that this type of fat may be “harmless” to the rest of your body.
There’s no way fat around your butt, hips, and thighs could EVER lead to adverse health conditions, right?
WRONG!
Now, apple-shaped people have long been associated with an increased risk for diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.
And pear-shaped people have been associated with a sort of protection against chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart diseases.
Until now!
A new study may shatter this myth and shed some light on important molecules – that are released from fat in your butt (commonly called gluteal fat) and how it may increase your risk for metabolic syndrome and other chronic diseases.
The researchers were looking at different molecules and their effects on a condition known as metabolic syndrome – which is many different health conditions, such as high blood pressure, altered cholesterol levels, insulin resistance, and a high BMI (remember these, because they will be important later!) rolled into one condition.
So here’s what they found:
First, they found that BUTT FAT (gluteal fat) produces and secretes two cytokines that may contribute to inflammation and fat cells dysregulation (the cells don’t function normally).
They found that higher levels of one of these molecules – chemerin – may be associated with increased C-reactive protein (inflammation marker), insulin resistance, higher triglycerides, high blood pressure, and low HDL cholesterol (remember the things mentioned above?).
And this may lead to an increased risk for metabolic syndrome!
Now, when they looked at the other molecule – Omentin-1 – they found that when this was low, there was an increase in blood sugar levels and triglycerides.
However, when it was high, there was a DECREASE in blood sugar levels, triglycerides, and an increase in HDL cholesterol levels.
The research concluded: “We make the novel observation of abnormal circulating and gluteal SAT-secreted chemerin and omentin-1 levels in nascent MetS which could confer a higher risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease.”
Simply put, altered levels of both of these molecules – which are secreted from the fat on your butt – may be linked to an increased risk for diabetes and heart disease.
And this is exactly why you need to lose the fat on your butt and scuplt it with lean, strong, metabolism-boosting muscle mass!
Protect Yourself
In order to protect yourself from a number of different chronic diseases, you need to do two things:
Lose weight through diet, AND you need to exercise!
Although more research is needed, this study may provide evidence that no matter where you carry your body fat, it may hold adverse health conditions.
With that being said, you should aim to lose weight – overall body fat – from all over your body, and not just in specific areas.
Of course, losing belly fat is important – due to visceral fat levels – but you should also look to lose weight off your butt, hips, and thighs.
Want an easy way to do this?
Eating a healthy diet and exercise, of course would be two easy solutions.
And if you eat a healthy diet AND you exercise, then you may qualify for this weight loss solution:
