Endothelial function, or the health of the inner lining or your veins and arteries, has long been in the forefront for signs of cardiovascular disease development.
Your endothelium is an integral component to the health of your vessels. It is responsible for platelet adhesion, immune function, volume and control of electrolytes entering and exiting the walls, and for mediation of co-augulation.
However, studies have shown that the health of your endothelium plays an integral role in the health of your heart.
Endothelial dysfunction, which is an imbalance in the substances that relax and constrict your vessels, has been implicated in an increased risk for developing heart disease.
However, the right diet and exercise program may lead to improvements in the health of your endothelium, thus reducing your cardiovascular disease risk.
Interestingly, omega-3 fatty acids, when they are supplemented or included in a healthy diet, have also been shown to improve the health of your endothelium, as well as overall heart health.
Now, a new study published in the journal Atherosclerosis, could show a direct link between omega-3 fatty acid supplementation and improvements in the health of your endothelium.
Let me explain…
Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Endothelial Function
According to this study, omega-3 fatty acid has been associated with a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease.
However, there is conflicting information on how omega-3 fatty acids work to reduce your risk.
According to this study, one key association to heart health could lie in the health of your endothelium.
The authors of this study wanted to determine (through a meta-analysis) the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on endothelial function, especially as they relate to flow-mediated dilation and endothelium-independent vasodilation.
They performed a meta-analysis (collection of articles related to the subject they are looking at) that assessed omega-3 fatty acids and endothelial health.
Their analysis included 16 studies that covered 901 patients, which were found by combing through all the major research databases.
When compared to the placebo groups, they noted that a dose of omega-3 fatty acids as low as .45 g/day to a dose as high as 4.5 g/day over the course of 56 days, significantly improved flow-mediated dilation in the subjects.
Flow-mediated dilation, simply stated, is when blood flows through a vessel, which then causes the vessel to dilate.
This could mean that omega-3 fatty acids may enable your vessel to dilate more, which then allows for more blood to flow to your heart and the rest of your body.
They did note that the improvements by the omega-3 fatty acids on flow-mediated dilation may be controlled by the overall health of the participants.
Simply put, the overall health of the participant may play a large role in the omega-3 fatty acids' ability to improve the flow-mediated dilation.
They also showed that omega-3 fatty acids did not significantly improve endothelium-independent vasodilation.
From their work, they concluded that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids could improve endothelial function without affecting endothelium-independent vasodilation.
Although more work is needed in this area, the results give promise to the heart-health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids as they relate to the health of your endothelium.
Powerful Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to improve many different healthy systems, but none more important than your heart.
They have been shown to reduce total and LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, increase HDL cholesterol, and lower blood pressure.
Now, according to the results of this study, omega-3 fatty acids may be able to improve the health of your endothelium, which is vital to the health of your cardiovascular and vascular system.
This study noted that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids (.45 g/day to 4.45 g/day) could be an effective way to improve the health of your endothelium.
However, including wild-caught fish, grass-fed beef, and flaxseed and flaxseed oil may also be ways to increase your omega-3 fatty acids intake, which may improve the health of your heart and vascular system.
