Yes, in order to avoid some of the most common chronic diseases, you need to eat right, exercise, and control stress levels.
However, sometimes this may not be enough!
Due to work demands, your kid’s busy social schedule, you may find yourself sitting down for long periods of time.
And, even if you go to the gym - you may be erasing all the benefits from any exercise you performed.
Studies show that even if you exercise – sitting for long periods of time may undo all the helpful benefits of exercise, therefore possibly increasing your risk for heart disease, diabetes, and other diseases.
But there is HOPE!
If you include THIS – everyday – into daily plan, you may actually reverse the dangerous effects of sitting for long periods of time.
Get More Steps In
Now, a lot of people think that if they workout, then they are in the free and clear.
And this may be right – up to a point.
You see, if you exercise – even running – you may not end up totaling the correct amount of steps throughout the day.
And the lower your steps, the higher your risk for diabetes and other chronic diseases becomes.
Numerous studies show that sitting in front of a computer, TV, or just plain sitting for long periods of time may undo the effects of exercise and predispose you to other chronic health conditions – including diabetes development.
However, if you engage in active rest – moving around every 20 minutes – you may increase your steps, therefore you could decrease your overall health risk.
And, a new study shows that taking less that 5,000 steps/day may lead to increased risk for weight gain, diabetes, and other unfavorable health issues.
Here’s what they found:
The authors found that people - who take fewer than 5000 steps/day - may have unfavorable body composition and cardiometabolic risks factors.
And, they showed that people, who went from 10000 steps/day to 5000 steps/day, had reduced insulin sensitivity and glycemic control, increase fat gain (adiposity), and other negative changes in health.
They concluded:
“Although few alternative values have been considered, the continued use of <5000 steps/day as a step-defined sedentary lifestyle index for adults is appropriate for researchers and practitioners and for communicating with the general public”
Keep On Moving
The health business is a tricky business, with lots of information and changes that occur every day – every minute even.
But one thing that doesn’t change – you need to exercise and eat right in order to stay healthy, fit, and disease-free (sort of).
However, if you are exercising, but then you sit for long periods of time (ex. Work), you may reverse the beneficial effects of exercise.
And, according to this study, by maintaining active motion throughout the day, you may increase your steps and improve your overall activity levels.
Getting up and moving – every 20 minutes – may improve your health and lower your risk for many chronic diseases, including diabetes.
And it could even result in increased weight loss!
So what are you waiting for, get moving today!
