Research shows that green tea, when consumed throughout the day, could promote significant health benefits.
Greet tea, which are natural tea leaves that are not oxidized (brown tea leaves are oxidized), contain many antioxidants, most notably, EGCG.
This could be why green tea, next to water, is the second most consumed beverage in the world.
You can trace the use of green tea back centuries in Asian cultures, due to their strong belief that green tea could promote better health.
Now, as research points out, the use of green tea could improve heart health, boost weight loss, possesses potent anti-aging properties, and may even boost brain function.
A new study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, could show an association between green tea intake and a boost in brain power.
Let me explain…
Green Tea and Brain Function
Recent research shows that ingesting green tea is not only beneficial for overall health, but may also boost brain health.
In preliminary findings, researchers have shown that green tea may have a pivotal role in improving cognitive functions.
The authors of this study wanted to examine the neural effects of green tea –especially as it relates to brain activation.
They recruited 12 healthy volunteers in a double-blind, controlled study using 250 mL or 500 mL of a green tea containing drink versus a control beverage (same as experimental just with no green tea added).
They performed as function MRI on the volunteers assessing working memory while they consumed the green tea or placebo beverage.
When the researchers assessed a specific region of interest (dorsolateral pre-frontal cortex), they showed that the green tea supplemented beverage increased activation in this area compared to the control condition.
The dorsolateral pre-frontal cortex is an area of your brain that has been shown to facilitate working memory in your brain.
From their work, they concluded green tea may control brain activity in the dorsolateral pre-frontal cortex in the brain. Also, they concluded that this is the first neuroimaging study showing that a function MRI may provide a better means of examining the effects of green tea on brain function.
Although this research is new, it still needs further research to validate their findings before green tea can be considered a treatment option for improving brain function.
However, it does further strengthen the health promoting benefits of green tea, and that green tea should be included in a healthy diet plan designed to improve overall health and wellness.
The Future of Green Tea
Green tea, which is quickly becoming one of the more popular drinks, has been shown in research to improve many facets of health.
From cardiovascular health to cancer prevention and weight loss, including green tea into your nutrition plan just makes sense.
Besides these benefits, research suggests that green tea may play a role in improving brain function.
According to the results of this study, the authors concluded that green tea may be able to strengthen the area that mediates working memory function, therefore potentially improving brain health.
So before you reach for your next diet soda or cup of coffee, replace it with a cup of green tea- your brain and body will thank you for it.
