Have you ever noticed…
That when little kids go and play outside, or go out to recess, or do some sort of EXERCISE, their day becomes a WHOLE HECK of a lot better?
Now, you may be thinking that it’s because the fresh air wore them out…
Or they’re simply too tired from all that running around…
Or maybe it’s because kids these days just don’t get enough exercise.
Well, I’m here to tell you that you are partially correct!
Yes, it’s true that many kids don’t get enough exercise during the day to make a difference on energy levels, physical activity levels, and more importantly, their weight.
Now, do you want to know the real reason why exercise helps kids in school?
It’s due to exercises ability to increase concentration and focus in children.
And guess what, it also helps in ADULTS!
That’s right, you and me.
Exercise and Concentration
Exercise has been shown to improve many aspects of health.
From better muscle tone, strength, and endurance, to better heart and metabolic health, exercise does wonders for keeping you healthy, fit, and YOUNG!
Now, past studies have shown that exercise boosts mental capacity and improves brain function.
However, a new study shows, that exercise – in active AND inactive people – has been linked to better concentration in both exercise and non-exercise groups.
In this study, researchers aimed to see if exercise was able to improve performance in different tasks related to concentration.
Here’s what they found:
First, they compared the results of exercise in highly fit adults and your average couch potato (non-exercisers).
They determined that exercise was able to boost mental capacity, compared to the non-exercising participants.
And, here’s where it is important, exercise was able to improve concentration and led to better overall cognitive function when they were focused on attention activities.
And, the fitter participants showed better reaction time in different tasks when compared to the lower exercise group.
They concluded:
“Our results highlighted the influence of cognitive processing and heart rate variability. Importantly, both behavioral and physiological results suggested that the main benefit obtained as a result of fitness level appeared to be associated with processes involving sustained attention.”
Time for More Exercise!
Exercise is an important aspect for improving your health, wellness, and for the prevention of chronic diseases.
However, there may be many people who do no exercise, therefore, may be in poor physical health, be susceptible to chronic diseases, and even have poor brain function.
In fact, this new study shows, that exercise not only boosts brain function, but may speed up reaction time on many cognitive tests AND improve concentration on specific tasks.
Take home message: the more you exercise, the better your health will be. And that includes your overall brain function and concentration!
