Scientists believe that Leptin Resistance is one of the main contributors to why so many people are overweight and obese.
So, what is Leptin Resistance??
To understand what Leptin Resistance is, we first have to understand what Leptin is and how Leptin functions.
Leptin is produced by our own fat cells. Sometimes it is called the “Master Fat Burning Hormone” or the “Hunger Hormone.”
The reason it is called this is because Leptin’s primary job is to regulate our appetite and help to control our metabolism.
When our bodies have enough excess or stored fat, the fat creates the hormone Leptin. Leptin then travels to the brain and reaches the hypothalamus to tell the brain that the body has enough stored fat, and that we can speed up our metabolism and decrease our appetite and hunger.

Now that we know what Leptin’s Function is, let’s quickly discuss what is Leptin Resistance and how it happens.
When we are overweight or obese, we obviously have plenty of stored fat which means our Leptin levels are higher. Assuming the communication between Leptin and the Brain is working properly, the brain gets the message that we have plenty of stored fat and should decrease our appetite.
Well, what tends to happen when we are overweight is the Leptin signal never reaches the brain, and this is called Leptin Resistance.
The brain then thinks the body is starving and increases the appetite while also slowing down the metabolism.
Now the body becomes fatter and weight loss is even more difficult.
Scientists believe there are a few reasons as to why this happens, but the majority feel it is because of a higher inflammation level within the body.
This higher inflammation level is a result of more fat metabolites circulating in the blood and creates a higher level of C-reactive protein (CRP).
The CRP tends to bind to Leptin which prevents it from crossing the blood-brain barrier and ends up never reaching the brain. The fat metabolites also reach the brain and some feel disrupts the signaling Leptin is trying to send.
These are the main reasons why people that are overweight continue to get heavier and struggle so much to lose weight.

Given the information we know from above, the best diet for Leptin Resistance would be to lower inflammation in the body.
By lowering the internal inflammation level, there is less C-reactive protein (CRP) molecules floating around in the blood which means they can’t bind to Leptin. The Leptin is then free to get past the blood-brain barrier and reach the brain to tell it the body has plenty of stored fat, and to decrease hunger and appetite.
Here are some guidelines for following an anti-inflammatory diet.
You want to avoid as many processed foods as possible since they promote inflammation in the body.
Eat more natural foods, such as fruits and vegetables, because they are high in anti-oxidants and will help lower internal inflammation.
These types of foods are also higher in fiber which can improve gut health. Good gut health is the starting point for reducing internal inflammation in the body.
Lower your triglyceride levels by avoiding excess sugar and limiting alcohol consumption. Research has indicated that when a person has higher triglyceride levels, it can shut down the movement of Leptin through the blood to the brain.
Add more lean protein to your diet as well because increased lean protein not only helps with losing weight, but it also allows Leptin to become more sensitive.
Eating an anti-inflammatory diet like this is not only going to help lower internal inflammation, but it will also help with weight loss. As weight loss occurs, the internal inflammation naturally lowers so the reason for adopting a diet for leptin resistance is two-fold.
