The researchers fed 27 rabbits a cholesterol-rich diet for 12 weeks.
Then they supplemented the diets with either Acai or water (placebo) and continued the cholesterol-rich diet for an additional 12 weeks.
The results were SURPRISING.
The rabbits, who consumed Acai berry extract, decreased total cholesterol, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol (LDL and VLDL).
They also noted smaller atherosclerotic plaques found in the aortas of rabbits fed the Acai berry extract.
They determined that Acai berry slowed the development of atherosclerosis in rabbits, and significantly improved blood lipid profiles.
This may give testament of the antioxidant power of Acai berry in regards to heart health and promotion of healthy blood lipid profiles.
The researchers concluded the benefits likely came from increased synthesis and absorption of the plant sterols.
