Commonly referred to as the “silent Killer,” chronic inflammation may be the root of all disease processes.

DHA and Inflammation
DHA – one of the omega-3 fatty acids – has been shown to reduce chronic inflammation by competing with pro-inflammatory compounds.
But there was no clear reason why DHA elicited this effect.
This led to researchers deconstructing the DHA molecule to determine its beneficial effects.
Here’s what they found:
First, they found that macrophages – compounds in your body that produce inflammatory molecules – may be directly affected by DHA.
In the presence of DHA, macrophages produce something called maresins, which are compounds that switch inflammation on or off.
So you may be asking, “How does it work?”
Well, when maresins molecules are produced, they may change macrophages from a type M1 to a type M2.
And the result: Less inflammatory molecules may be produced, therefore reducing the amount of inflammation present in the body.
They concluded:
“Given its actions and role in MaR1 biosynthesis, this epoxide is now termed 13,14-epoxy-maresin (13,14-eMaR) and exhibits new mechanisms in resolution of inflammation in its ability to inhibit proinflammatory mediator production by LTA4 hydrolase and to block arachidonate conversion by human 12-LOX rather than merely terminating phagocyte involvement.”
Simply put, macrophages produce potent compounds when present with DHA, which changes the macrophages to produce less inflammatory molecules.
DHA and Your Health
The omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA, have been shown in research to be extremely beneficial to your body.
From reducing cholesterol to improvements in brain health, DHA and EPA are potent molecules needed for optimal health.
Now, according to this study, DHA has been shown to reduce inflammation levels by changing macrophages (produce inflammatory compounds) from one type to another.
