There is one place that I really want to visit in the Northeat – and that would be Maine. From what I hear, summer is pretty darn good out there..
They do the usual--BBQ, hit the beach, and other typical fun things. But here is where they are set apart:
They have fields and fields of blueberries!
And that means farmers' markets will be super packed and it's a great place to pick up fresh, straight-from-the-garden fruits and vegetables that are picked at their peak ripeness.
This makes for some delicious foods and snack options that are filled with vitamins, minerals, and plenty of other fat-boosting nutrients.
Here’s a short list of my favorites:
1. Blueberries
Among other things (like lobster), Maine is known for two things: potatoes and blueberries.
Blueberries (perfect for snacks, salads, or sides) are a low-calorie, fiber-packed food.
Plus, they hold special antioxidants – called polyphenols – which some studies have shown can burn extra fat.
In fact, when researchers applied the polyphenols to fat cells in petri dishes, the higher the polyphenol concentration, the less fat was present.
Something can be said for this tiny, blue, power-packed fruit.
Peak Season: May to August (but found frozen year round)
2. Eggplant
Shifting from the fat burning area, eggplant is one vegetable that is filled with CANCER-fighting nutrients.
One nutrient, nasunin, has been shown in some studies to slow the growth of cancer cells.
Plus, eggplant is perfect for boosting heart-health, due to its ability to open up blood vessels.
This allows for smoother flow of blood from your heart to all the major organs in your body.
Peak Season: June and July
3. Garlic
Garlic, which has been used for centuries for cooking, warding off vampires, and other things, may be a potent fat buster.
Garlic has been shown to reduce the number of fat cells that are present in your body.
Result: fewer fat cells = less ability for your body to store fat.
Plus allicin, a natural component of garlic, has been shown to possess antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. Translation: keeps you healthier and sickness-free.
Peak season: June and July
4. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are known for one powerful nutrient: lycopene.
Lycopene has been shown to improve heart health by lowering LDL cholesterol, therefore improving your cholesterol numbers.
Plus, lycopene may be able to fight off damage from free radicals (due to the aging process), therefore keeping you feeling younger and lowering your inflammation levels.
Peak season: June through October
