In today’s cut-throat world, there are many men (and women) that lie just to get ahead, increase their wealth, or just flat out like to lie, if it furthers them in life.
Whatever happened to honesty and the quest for self-perfection?
The fact is, lying is considered by societal norms, to be frowned upon and, most of the time, condemned.
The most common form of lying, self-serving lying, is by far the worst and is considered wrong by society standards, and ends up causing the person’s reputation great harm.
However, honesty has been the cornerstone to healthy relationships and social communication.
Of course, there are many reasons why a person lies.
But research is showing that testosterone, the male sex hormone, has been linked to brain and reproductive development, but also to lying as well.
But in a good way!
Testosterone and Lying
Studies have shown that testosterone is an important hormone in both reproductive and brain development.
Unfortunately, high levels of testosterone have been linked to aggression, among other things.
Current research shows that high- or low- testosterone levels may cause either negative or positive social behavior.
And yes, that includes lying!
In fact, a new study shows that men, who were given testosterone supplementation, were LESS LIKELY TO LIE, compared to men who didn’t receive the testosterone at all.
Pretty amazing stuff, huh?
Not only were the men given the opportunity to LIE, but they were also given rewards for lying.
Now wait, how does THAT work?
The men rolled dice and were given payouts depending on their self-reported results.
So if they did better on the roll, they were given a higher payout (which is where the lying begins).
Now the men who were given the supplementation lied less than the men without the extra T!
What about self-serving lying (remember, this is the WORST kind of lying)?
Self-serving lying was present in both groups, which could have resulted in higher payouts in those groups.
But the men who received the testosterone got LOWER payouts, which could have been from a lower rate of self-serving lying among those men.
The researchers of this study concluded:
“Our results contribute to the recent debate on the effect of testosterone on prosocial behavior and its underlying channels.”
Testosterone: Isn’t Just About Your Muscles Anymore
Testosterone, which is the male sex hormone, has been shown to boost male virility, reproductive development, muscle strength and size, and also brain development.
Now, stepping aside from all the physiological aspects of testosterone, it has also been shown to play a key role in behavior and social skills.
Lying, which is prevalent in modern societies and is considered wrong, is a social behavior that many people wish would go away.
Now, with recent studies on how testosterone affects social behavior, researchers may be able to link increased testosterone levels with a lower incidence of lying.
This new study, could verify previous findings that MORE testosterone could positively affect social behavior, and may reduce self-serving and lying in general.
