Should You NEVER Get A Flu Shot?
By Kevin DiDonato, MS, CES--Level 1 Certified Precision Nutrtion and Certified Personal Trainer
You have the sniffles…
You have a scratchy throat…
You have the hacking cough…
Guess what? It must be cold and flu season!
And no matter what you do, you can’t seem to shake your nagging cough for weeks at a time.
But it gets worse: There is always that co-worker that NEVER gets sick...he/she is always happy and never seems to be run down or constantly seem with a tissue in their nose.
Why? Does this person have some sort of secret to NOT getting the latest cold or flu going around the office?
Is their immune system impenetrable?
The answer is, probably not. But, if they exercise and they use KRILL OIL, then they may know something that not a lot of people know about…
Exercise, Immunity, and Krill Oil
During cold and flu season you may do everything in your power to boost your immune system in order to ward off the nasty bacteria that could make you sick.
That may include pumping the vitamin C, drinking plenty of green tea and water, and even exercising for longer periods of time.
All for the sake of strengthening your immune system so you don’t get sick.
But here’s one problem: Studies show that people WHO exercise intensely, may actually have a weaker immune system!
Crazy, I know! Unheard of, not really!
Earlier studies showed that mice, who exercised to exhaustion, had a much higher chance of being infected by the flu virus compared to mice who exercised leisurely.
Even worse, the exercising mice were more likely to get sick compared to sedentary mice!
Crazy, right!
Well here’s some breaking new research to consider, this time on HUMAN participants…
A recently released study shows that people supplemented with just TWO grams each day with Krill Oil may have a stronger immune system AFTER exercising!
Outstanding, right?
A simple way to exercise—even intensely—and still give you immune system a boost!
A serious win-win if I have ever seen one!
So, let’s talk about the nitty-gritty to the study:
First, they took 19 men and 18 females and separated them into a control group and a group that received 2 grams of Krill oil each day.
They recorded measurements and blood work pre-supplementation and post-supplementation (immediately after, one hour and three hours post-workout).
They were looking for changes in immune system molecules to see if Krill oil supplementation was able to increase immune function after an all-out exercise session.
First, they found there was no increased exercise performance in the krill oil group.
But what they did find will astound you!
They found that those in the Krill oil group had higher levels of PBMC IL-2 and NK cell toxicity (both signs of a stronger immune system) was higher compared to the control group.
And to make it even better: The levels continued to climb and were at its highest three hours post-workout!
They concluded: “Six weeks of krill oil supplementation can increase PBMC IL-2 production and NK cell cytotoxic activity 3h post-exercise in both healthy young males and females. Krill oil does not modify exercise performance.”
Take Home Message
This time of year of year is the worst for those looking to avoid the cold or the flu.
People take all sorts of extreme measures, all in hopes that they can avoid the hacking cough, runny nose, and congested feeling that are often associated with a cold or the flu.
One way that most people turn to, would be to exercise—and exercise hard!
Recent studies show this may not improve your immune system, but actually weaken it.
However, one brand-new study shows that people who exercise to exhaustion (normally associated with a weaker immune system) and take 2 grams of krill oil may have a stronger immune system compared to those who do not take krill oil.
So, if you exercise in order to avoid catching the common cold—or worse, succumbing to the flu—then I suggest you start using Krill Oil in order to boost your immunity and bulletproof your health.
