Protect Your Hearing With Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Age-related hearing loss, which is common as you age, is defined as the slow loss of hearing over time.

In fact, it is the number one social and health problem that affects older adults.

Normally, the tiny hairs of your ear pick up sound waves and transform those waves into nerve energy in order for your brain to process them.

However, as you get older, you start to lose the tiny hairs in your ear, which gradually leads to hearing loss.

Since the tiny hairs do NOT grow back (due to damage or them dying off) this could result in permanent hearing loss.

Although the loss of those tiny hairs are the number one reason for hearing loss, environmental factors (loud music and smoking), and family history (genetic) could also be reasons.

According to current research, the use of omega-3 fatty acids could improve your hearing.

In fact, according to a study published in the Journal of Nutritional Health and Aging, omega-3 fatty acids provide new insight into their use and how they may slow hearing loss as you get older.

Let me explain…

Hearing Loss and You

Age-related hearing loss, otherwise known as presbycusis, is a common condition that affects your ability to hear at different frequencies.

In fact, most often you lose your ability to hear high-frequency sounds first, followed by lower-frequency sounds.

Omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown beneficial in eye and brain health, could be a novel treatment option in reducing your risk for hearing loss.

According to the authors of this study, there is very little scientific research regarding omega-3 fatty acids and hearing loss.

However, they attempted to determine if omega-3 fatty acids could be associated with a reduced risk for hearing loss.

They performed a cross-sectional, 3-year longitudinal study on 720 older men and post-menopausal women (aged 50-70), who were free from middle ear dysfunction or unilateral hearing loss.

They measured hearing at baseline and at the end of three years, gauging hearing loss as the increase in mean hearing threshold in the low and high frequencies over the course of the study.

The researchers showed that people with the highest intake of omega-3 fatty acids had less hearing loss in the lower frequency over the course of three years, when compared to the lowest omega-3 intake group.

They also noted that there was no significant association between high frequency hearing loss and omega-3 fatty acids.

From their work, they concluded that there was an inverse relationship between plasma omega-3 fatty acids and age-related hearing loss.

Although this research shows promise, they also noted that more research is needed to replicate their findings.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Hearing

Age-related hearing loss is a common social health issue that affects older adults.

In fact, it has been shown that many older adults suffer from some sort of age-related hearing loss due to either medication, environmental conditions, or loss of tiny hairs within your middle ear.

However, omega-3 fatty acids (shown beneficial in eye, brain, and heart health) could be positively associated with a reduction in hearing loss as you get older.

According to the results of this study, people who had the highest intake of omega-3 fatty acids showed less hearing loss over the course of three years.

Including a high quality omega-3 supplement or implementing a high omega-3 fatty acid-rich diet (fish, flax, krill, or krill oil) could lead to improvements in many different areas of your health, but most notably, potentially reducing your hearing loss as you get older.
