Why It Is Never Too Late To Start Exercising
With aging, comes a whole host of medical conditions that may alter your health - including the health of your brain.
Problems with vision, stiff and achy joints, and arthritis top the list of common ailments that older people complain about.
Plus, aging may be associated with memory problems, cognitive issues, and diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Scientists and neurologists for years have tried to figure out a way to slow the degenerative process that occurs in your brain.
Up until now, the use of omega-3 fatty acids has been shown to be effective at slowing the gradual decline in brain function, matter, and size.
But there may be OTHER factors that could slow the gradual loss in brain function.
According to a NEW research study, it shows that leisure activity or physical activity could also be effective at reducing cognitive decline in older adults.
Physical Activity and Your Brain
Physical activity, which is defined as any bodily activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health or wellness, is considered by many to be the true FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH.
It has been shown to maintain flexibility of your joints, strengthen your muscles, strengthen your heart and lungs, and may even make you feel rejuvenated.
Now, it has also been shown to be cognitively protective.
Basically, physical activity may IMPROVE the health of your brain and the cells in your brain.
Now, if you think that you are too old to exercise, think again!
This study was conducted with people who were 70 years old or older.
So what did the study show?
The study, which looked at areas of the brain, atrophy of brain cells, lesions in the white matter of the brain, and the level of gray matter in the brain, showed that physical activity may be able to protect the brain from cognitive decline.
Their results were AMAZING and could shed a new light on the benefits of exercise!
They showed that people who engaged in physical activity:
Had less brain cell atrophy…
Had an increase in gray matter of the brain…
Had a larger degree of normal appearing white matter…
And, best of all, lower lesions were found in the white matter of the brain.
Even after they made adjustments for age, social class, and health status, the results remained SIGNIFICANT!
They concluded:
“Physical activity was associated with less atrophy and white matter lesions. Its role as a potential neuroprotective factor is supported.”
Never Too Late to Exercise
Exercise or physical activity, research suggests, is beneficial to many different systems, cells, and organs in your body.
The most important organ, your brain, has also been shown to benefit from regular physical activity.
In fact, this study, which assessed the health of people 70 and older, showed that people engaging in physical activity, showed 1) lower brain cell atrophy, 2) lower white matter lesions, and 3) an increase in the gray matter of the brain.
These finding are important, not only for overall health, but for potentially preventing cognitive decline as you get older.
So no matter how old you are or how out of shape you are, starting an exercise program, or including some physical activity, may not only promote weight loss, increase muscle size and shape, and improve your cardiovascular system, but it could even strengthen your brain.
And this could make all the difference as you get older!
