Do NOT Give This To Your Kids
Is it any wonder why the mayor of New York is on a crusade against soda and sugar-sweetened beverages?
The stuff may taste okay, but the ill health effects are stuff that horror movies are made from.
Things like eroded teeth from cavities…
Higher rates of diabetes…
And your ever-expanding waistline!
Although a lot of people don’t touch the stuff, there is a growing population of people who do.
You may know them as your children, your friend’s children, or local teenagers you see walking down the street.
And, if you haven’t noticed, there is also a growing problem with this generation: They are becoming more overweight and obese than are young adults and adults.
The Research
Now, most people blame sugar-sweetened beverages for a number of different problems, and rightly so!
Sugar-sweetened beverages – which are loaded with calories and sugar – could be the number one reason for increased weight gain, overweight children, or even obese children.
The problem: Children consume one or more of the beverages, therefore increasing their total daily caloric intake.
And, teenagers who consume a lot of sugar-sweetened beverages tend to eat more high-fat and high-calorie foods, when compared to children who don’t consume sugar-sweetened beverages at all.
And a new study, just published, shows that this scary trend is both accurate and may play a key role in the health of future generations. Here’s what they found:
They found that sugar-sweetened beverages were primarily responsible for the higher-caloric intake in children between the ages of TWO and FIVE, and SIX and ELEVEN.
And, they showed that for children between the ages of 12 and 18, both food intake and sugar-sweetened beverage intake may have accounted for as much as 500 extra calories per day.
The most common foods they consumed: high-calorie, nutrient-poor foods such as pizza, chips, burgers, fried potatoes, and savory snacks.
From their work, they concluded: “Sugar-sweetened beverages are primarily responsible for the higher caloric intake of SSB consumers, and SSB consumption is associated with intake of a select number of food and beverage groups, some of which are unhealthy (e.g., pizza and grain-based desserts).”
Take Home Message
As parents, it’s our responsibility to teach our children the rights and wrongs of the world.
To educate them on morals, hard work, and dedication!
It is also our responsibility to educate them on the right and wrong foods to put in their mouth.
By teaching healthy eating and lifestyle habits - when your children are young - will instill proper weight management habits for future years, when you may not be able to watch their every move.
Warn them about the dangers of sugar-sweetened beverages so they too, just like you, will continue to stay happy, healthy, and free from poor diet-related chronic diseases.
