Is Coffee Good Or BAD For You?

Diabetes is a disease that affects 346 million people worldwide, according to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Statistics show that in 2004, 3.4 million people died from complications related to diabetes.

The WHO also projects the number of deaths will double between the years 2005-2030.

Diabetes is a disease characterized by your body not producing insulin (Type-1 Diabetes), or your body is unable to use insulin effectively (Type-2 Diabetes).

Type-2 Diabetes has been associated mainly with adults, but now there are an increasing number of cases among children.

Currently, research is being conducted in different areas regarding Diabetes, from treatment with omega-3 rich foods and supplements, to the amount of coffee consumed per day.

In fact, a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, shows that your coffee consumption in a day may have a positive association for your risk for developing Diabetes and other chronic diseases.

Give me a minute to explain…

Coffee Consumption and Chronic Disease Risk

Current research has shown that coffee may be associated with an increased risk for developing chronic diseases such as heart disease, Type-2 Diabetes and some cancers.

However, a new study could show otherwise.

Researchers aimed to see if there was a positive correlation between coffee consumption and risk for chronic diseases.

They collected data from a large study, the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Germany study, to determine coffee consumption and chronic disease development.

They looked at 42,659 participants, who filled out questionnaires on dietary intake (how much coffee was consumed in a day), as well as disease status in both active and passive follow-ups.

They followed the participants for almost 9 years (8.9), and looked at per day coffee consumption (<1 cup vs. ≥4 cups/day).

During the follow-up period, they saw 1,432 cases of Type-2 Diabetes, 384 cases of heart attacks (MI), 310 cases of stroke, and 1,801 cases of cancer.

They showed a positive association between increased coffee consumption and a reduced risk for chronic diseases.

They noted that less than one cup of coffee per day was associated with an increased risk, regardless of the type of coffee consumed (caffeinated or decaffeinated).

However, they showed higher coffee intake (≥4 cups/day), again either decaffeinated or caffeinated, showed a decreased risk.

They also noted that higher coffee intake per day reduced the risk for Type-2 Diabetes, but cardiovascular disease and cancer risks were unaffected (results were higher for decaffeinated coffee versus caffeinated, however, by very little).

Through their research, they concluded that coffee consumption does not increase risk for chronic diseases, plus it may decrease your risk for developing Type-2 Diabetes.

This research is new, and although it shows a positive association, it still must be verified by more research before it can be considered a viable treatment option.

Even More Benefits to Coffee

Coffee could be emerging as another way to increase antioxidants, vitamins, and essential minerals necessary for maintaining proper health.

In fact, some research studies have shown that the mineral magnesium, which may be found in high amounts in coffee, has been shown to reduce insulin levels in people with Type-2 Diabetes.

Research, such as this, is new and needs to be verified by more research to support their findings, but could allow for a bigger argument for coffee as a preventative treatment option for people at risk for diabetes.
