Why Arthritis Happen When You Get Older (do you have it?)

By Kevin DiDonato MS, CES--Level 1 Certified Precision Nutrition and Certified Personal Trainer

There are millions of people around the world that suffer from painful arthritis symptoms.

Some may experience sharp, shooting pains when they move a specific joint…

Perhaps some may have a burning sensation when they climb stairs…

Or, some may even have painful twinges in their lower backs!

There is no mistaking it: Arthritis may be a painful experience for millions of people.

But, is arthritis really caused by childhood injuries as previously thought?

Well, you may be surprised…

Arthritis and the Body

You may think of arthritis as the gradual wearing away of your joint cartilage – causing bone-on-bone contact in the joints of your body.

Although true, this is not the only cause of arthritis.

Arthritis is also an inflammatory condition, where high levels of inflammation leads to the wearing away of joint cartilage – the tissue that softens the impact in your joints of your everyday activities.

However, arthritis could go hand-in-hand with a number of chronic diseases that may be occurring in your body.

Need proof?

Current statistics from the Arthritis Foundation show that 57 percent of adults with heart disease also suffer from arthritis.

And, in cases of rheumatoid arthritis (form of inflammatory arthritis that destroys joints leading to deformities), the numbers are even higher.

But that’s not all…

Statistics also show that 52 percent of people with Diabetes also have arthritis.

And when it comes to overweight or obese adults, there is more stress put on the joints (for every ONE pound over your desired weight, there is FOUR pounds of extra pressure added to the joint), which could lead to more stress placed on the joints in your body.

And the more pressure placed on the joints, the more likely it becomes that your joints could wear away at a much faster rate.

So what causes poor joint health?

There are a few:

Exposure to second-hand smoke or smoking may raise your risk for developing arthritis.

Eating the WRONG foods – ones that are inflammatory, like sugar for example – may also increase the likelihood that you could develop arthritis.

Bacteria and toxins that destroy your joints AND previous injuries to your joints could also increase your risk for developing arthritis as you get older.

What You Can Do

Arthritis is an inflammatory condition that deteriorates the health of your joints by the gradual wearing away your joint cartilage.

Although arthritis is associated with previous injuries, this may not be the only cause of your arthritis.

In fact, many chronic diseases – such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity – may also indicate that you have arthritis.

Also, the foods you eat and environmental factors (toxins, bacteria, etc.) may also increase your risk for arthritis.

In order to reduce your risk and protect your joints, you should eat the right foods – ones full of anti-inflammatory nutrients – exercising, and limiting your exposure to harmful toxins that may erode the health of your joints.
