The Potential Dangers Associated With GMO Foods

The government is at it again…

And this time, your health may be the one to suffer!

Recently, a bill was passed that gave the BIG food company, Monsanto, the right to keep producing GMO seeds and plant products.

And this action could directly impact your health, the health of your children, and your children’s children.

Don’t get me wrong here.

There is plenty of GOOD that may come out of genetically modified organisms…

But, until they have been thoroughly researched, there is not a lot of information one can get regarding the health implications associated with higher intakes of GMO foods.

But, since we are in the business of delivering news, here is a little bit you should know about GMO foods.

GMO Seeds and Food Products

GMO – which stands for genetically-modified organisms – are basically foods that have been genetically modified (in a lab) to produce a higher quality food product.

They are NOT classified as a food per se, but as an organism, therefore certain government entities have very little control over their production.

Basically, these food products are genetically enhanced to be resistant to certain chemicals – like pesticides or products normally used to kill nasty insects – as well as bugs.

Now, what is so good about these altered foods?

For one, they may have a better shelf life than unmodified foods, therefore reducing the amount of waste generated by spoiled foods.

Also, they are resistant to pesticides and invasive bugs, meaning you can spray them until your heart’s content, without harming the food or product.

Plus, being resistant to invasive bugs, means there would be less pesticide use by farmers to maintain a healthy crop.

They may also hold higher nutritional value, which could mean you could get a better vitamin and mineral profile out of these products.

Now, as you can see, the growth and spread of GMO foods may solve a lot of the global hunger problems, by mass producing a crop that is resistant to many bugs and pesticides, which in essence, may curb – or end – the problem with hunger.

But why the heated debate and controversy?

The BIG Deal

You may be asking yourself, “So, what is the big deal?”

Well to start, according to some facts and figures, farmers are now using MORE pesticides with the introduction of GMO crops.

That could mean more pesticides are spread to other plants – and into the air – which may be adding a tremendous amount of your exposure to harmful, often times, toxic chemicals.

In fact, in 1996, some of the GMO seeds were modified to enable them to be resistant to Roundup.

Roundup, which is a popular weed killer, has also been shown to destroy non-modified plants and crops.

And over-exposure to Roundup has been linked to a number of health ailments, including damage to your DNA.

Secondly, GMO foods may introduce new allergens into the population.

Similarly, there could be an increase in the amount of antibiotic-resistant organisms and bacteria that may alter your normal gut flora, as well as the other ecological systems of the world, namely plants and animals.

Now, again, there is very little research on the health impact of GMO food products.

But, in the coming years, you will see more and more studies regarding the implications that GMO products have on human, animal, and plant life as we know it today.

Should You Avoid GMO Products?

As previously mentioned, there is very little research, but a casually-linked connection between GMO food and poor health.

In the coming years, more studies will be conducted regarding the impact GMO foods have on our health.

Until more research comes out, GMO food products will continue to be a source of controversy amongst those in favor and those opposed.

And for those on the fence, here are some of the popular GMO products:

• Soybeans – modified to be resistant to Roundup and other glyphosate herbicide products

• Corn – resistant to insects and pests

• Canola – alters the fatty acids composition of canola oil

• Plums – resistant to plum pox virus

Due to very little research on the health implications, the effects to the ecological system, and other debates, many people avoid the use of GMO products for safety, health, and of course, political reasons.

The best advice: Until more research is done on its impact to human health, it would be a good idea to avoid them until more concrete results are in.
