7 Changes That Occur In Your Body When You Stop Having Sex

By Kevin DiDonato MS, CES—Level 1 Certified Precision Nutrition and Certified Personal Trainer

I want you to repeat this for me:

“There is absolutely nothing wrong with going without sex for a while—or even longer.”

Why do I want you to repeat that?  There are many people who may not be having sex on a regular basis—either by their own volition or due to a breakup, life stress, or changes to their current relationship.

It’s perfectly normal and understandable.

But:

I do want you to know that your decision to abstain from sex—be it your own decision or a life change—may cause things to change in your body and with your health...

…especially if you’re used to sex on the regular!

Regardless of why you decided to stop having sex, there could be some negative health ramifications that could occur from stopping sex.

And many of these changes could pose a higher health risk for your body.   Even though it may sound negative, there is nothing wrong with abstaining from sex—as abstinence could be good for your mind and soul.

You may want to lo take a look at the changes that occur to your body and decide for yourself the right action (pun completely intended) to take:

1. Your Immune System Takes a Hit

Unfortunately, giving up sex may increase your risk for catching a cold or developing the flu.

You see, sex has a two-fold approach to boosting your immune system.  First, it helps to lower stress, which could help your immune system function and fight off viruses and bacteria that could make you sick.

Secondly, sex may help to boost antibodies to keep you healthy and less likely to develop a cold or the flu.

2. Increased Blood Pressure Numbers

Everyone knows that sex is good for your heart.  Besides lowering your stress levels, sex also plays a very important role in blood pressure management.

Especially in women!  You see, when a woman orgasms during sex, the hormone oxytocin is released, which has a direct impact on blood pressure.

3. Improves Brain Health

Everyone knows that sex feels good—and that’s because of the release of powerful endorphins in the brain.

But did you know, sex may improve memory, concentration, and attention?

It’s true!  A new study shows that having sex regularly improved the brain health of the participants.

They theorize that sex floods your brain with dopamine, which impacts learning.  They also believe that dopamine may  boost certain cognitive effects in the brain.

4. Less Lubrication

The old saying, “if you don’t use it, you lose it,” applies here.

The less frequently you engage in sex—the less likely you will feel aroused which may shut down glands in the sex organs.

In women especially, this may make for a “dry vagina,” therefore making sex painful the next time you have it.

Regular sex or even masturbation may help to keep the glands working correctly and your body primed for your next encounter.

5. Less Toned Vagina

Ladies, if you stop having sex regularly, you may have some issues with less toned muscles in your vagina.

And this may make sex painful the next time you have it.

Regular sex increases blood flow to the vagina, therefore keeping vaginal muscles toned and stretched out.

6.  Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

I hate to have to tell you this, but lack of sex could eventually lead to erectile dysfunction.

A study in the American Journal of Medicine showed that men who had sex once a week were half as likely to experience erectile dysfunction compared to men who reported less sex.

The study concluded by saying that routine sex may protect against erectile dysfunction.

7. Less Sex leads to MORE Stress

Sex is a great way to relieve stress.  It releases endorphins that may improve stress levels and mood.

The less sex you have, the more stressed out you may become.  A study on college students showed women who had less sex before an exam, had much higher stress levels compared to those women who had more regular sex.

The Final Word…

Sex is an extremely important part of your life.  But sometimes people don’t have sex regularly due to breakups, life stress, relationship issues, or just as a personal challenge.

Whatever the reason, giving up sex may cause some unsafe health issues to occur.  If you’re thinking about stopping sex—or halting sex—then you may want to reconsider just what giving up sex means for your body.
