1 Unusual Way To Improve This Common Skin Allergy
Did you know that you can get an allergy – on your SKIN?
It’s hard to believe, but it’s true!
Most people associate allergies with sneezing, wheezing, and runny noses.
But what you may not know is that atopic dermatitis – which is a chronic skin disorder – may be the results of an allergy on your skin.
And this could lead to itchy rashes…
Red and inflamed skin…
Even scaly patches!
Now, if you have or had this condition, than you know how painful and itchy it can be.
However, new research shows that the use probiotics, more specifically Lactobacillus plantarum, may be effective at improving this -often times annoying -skin condition.
Probiotics and Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis usually rears its ugly head around two to six months of age.
It is most common in infants, toddlers, and young children, and most often times, resolves itself by adulthood.
Common treatment options include using non-allergenic soaps, shampoos, and conditioners, plus using over-the-counter or prescription medications (corticosteroids).
Sometimes they are effective, and sometimes they are not.
Researchers wanted to see if the use of probiotics – lactobacillus plantarum to be more specific – could improve symptoms associated with atopic dermatitis in children.
So, they did an experiment (of course)!
They wanted to test and see if taking lactobacillus plantarum, twice a day for 12 weeks could improve symptoms of atopic dermatitis in children.
Here is what they found (very SURPRISING):
They showed that SCORAD scores in the probiotic group were significantly LOWER than the control group.
SCORAD, which stands for SCOring of Atopic Dermatitis, is a numeric score that determines the severity of the condition.
And, they showed NO SIGNIFICANT difference between the use of corticosteroids in either the probiotic or the control group.
Here is something else:
The probiotic group had lower eosinophil counts than the control group.
Eosinophil count is a blood test that measure white blood cell count, which may become elevated when there is exposure to an allergen, allergic disease (atopic dermatitis), or other medical conditions.
Plus, there were lower inflammatory markers in the probiotic group compared to the control group.
They concluded:
“Our results suggest that supplementation with Lactobacillus Plantarum is beneficial in the treatment of pediatric atopic dermatitis.”
Novel Approach to Skin Allergies
Atopic dermatitis is a very common condition that affects infants, children, and toddlers.
Most often times, it may be completely cured by adulthood.
However, it may be an annoying skin allergy, due to the constant itching, red, inflamed, and scaly skin.
For most parents, the use of over-the-counter medications - or corticosteroids -may be the best way to relieve symptoms associated with it.
Now, however, this new study shows that the probiotic lactobacillus plantarum may be just – or MORE effective – at improving symptoms associated with atopic dermatitis.
Although they have been shown to be effective for this condition, probiotics –which are live bacteria – have also been shown to alleviate cold and flu symptoms and improve many other aspects of health.
